Job Description

Looking for either UK based or experienced overseas histopathologists with relevant reporting experience - this role can be offered on either a locum (fixed-term) contract or as a substantive role with AAC panel interview. Consultants looking to complete their CESR in the next 6-12 months can be accommodated in particuarl - dependent on experience. 

All in all this is an excellent opportunity for any histopathologists with or without NHS experience to develop either specific clinical interests or leadership & management skills.

Experience working with either UK, US, Canadian or EU reporting systems will lend itself particularly well to this opportunity. 

The Opportunity

An exciting Royal College approved consultant role to be part of a growing & diverse department at a moment of growth for this NHS Pathology group.

This consultant post offers a 10PA, forty hours per week contract, with additional hours and remuneration available for those that want it. Consultants with special interest in gynecology, upper and lower GI, dermatopathology, urology, breast and head & neck are of particular interest however consultants with different special interests can also be accommodated.

The Department

Consultants are required to fill new posts created across two of the group's main sites - joining diverse and high performing consultant teams in a moment of exciting expansion for the group.

Existing teams are diverse and made up of consultants from the UK, Spain, France, South Africa, India and the Middle East. Management and clinical staff work hard to engender an empowering and supportive work environment, and the Trust consistently scores 'Good' in their annual CQC report.

Departmental Accreditations 

The laboratory is approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for pre-registration and specialist training in Cellular Pathology. 

The department has full UKAS/ISO accreditation. The Department is HTA compliant and HFEA accredited and takes part in benchmarking exercises. 

Caseload and Performance

The current annual workload fo the Trust and its associated General Practitioners is approximately 37,000 histology requests, 4400 non-gynaecological cytology and approximately 1100 coronial autopsies. More than 90% of all histology and non-gynaecological cytology requests are from the secondary care setting. 

One of the hospitals two sites is the main regional centre for gynaecological cytology screening and receives approximately 176,000 requests per annum, predominantly from primary care. 

NHS experience or excellent senior experience in other healthcare systems is a pre-requisite for this position.

    UK based consultants with CCT or experienced overseas histopathologists with Specialist Registration or part-completed CESR can be considered for these fantastic opportunities working with one of the UK\'s fastest growing NHS pathology services.


    Those with Specialist Registration will be encouraged to develop the departmental teaching programmes and develop their areas of specialist interest. Consultants that need to complete their CESR will be supported through the process whilst also developing their areas of special interest.

    A Cellular Pathology service in West Wales are looking to appoint histopathology consultants to the their developing and exciting service in one of the most beautiful and low cost areas of the UK. These are excellent opportunities for European Pathology Specialists, newly qualified UK consultants or senior histopathologists with FRCPath looking to work through their CESR process to be appointed substantively. 

    WHAT IS THE HEALTH BOARD LIKE?

    The Health Board is one of seven acute Health Boards in Wales and covers a quarter of the land mass of Wales. This post comes during a period of Health Board-wide service reviews and a major expansion in undergraduate medical student teaching is planned. The Health Board provides services to a large catchment area and is predominantly rural in nature with areas of outstanding beauty. 

    The potential for Health Board-wide, Regional and All Wales developments and a closer liaison with primary care and social services is substantial. They are actively involved in realising a regional service for Cellular Pathology with a business case being submitted to Welsh Government. The service is also engaged with the All Wales Digital Pathology project and Cellular Pathology has also recently implemented the All Wales LIMS Intersystems module. The post therefore allows the interested incumbent to live in an area of outstanding beauty, become established at work and in time with agreement transfer to the new organisation.

    WHAT IS THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?

    The consultant team is six strong with an additional three posts being appointed, with the consultants supported by a team of Biomedical Scientists, Lab Technicians and an excellent, supportive and friendly management team.

    Strategically the Cellular Pathology service is provided using a hub and spoke model for service delivery with the centre for this appointment being the hub. Consultants in Cellular Pathology, work as a team, which will allow the development of subspecialisation.

    Service application for ISO 15189 assessment via UKAS is planned for 2021 and the processing laboratory provides centralised services in both immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. A new Mortuary/Autopsy suite/Relatives’ Services Facility opened in early 2011.

    Approximately 10-15% of specimens come from general practitioners. The majority of autopsies are at the request of H M Coroner with on average less than 5 consented autopsies per year across the Health Board. HER2 testing in Breast Cancer is provided together with molecular (FISH) testing from the laboratory in a neighbouring health board. Molecular pathology related to lymphoma diagnosis is provided as part of The All Wales Lymphoma Panel from a neighbouring trust and a comprehensive Molecular testing repertoire is provided by the All Wales Molecular Laboratory based elsewhere.

Property prices are lower than many parts of the UK with excellent State and Independent Schools within the area. There are excellent road and rail connections to London and the larger cities.     Research Opportunities are plentiful and the Health Board has University status with strong links to the local Universities to promote research & development and multi-professional teaching. The Health Board is committed to enhance local research and development and the successful applicant would be strongly encouraged to develop a local research portfolio as part of their core NHS responsibilities (Handbook to the NHS Constitution, January 2009) as it improves patient outcomes.The annual operating R&D Budget has increased by over 750% since 2008 and research operates across all 4 hospital sites with increasing opportunities in Primary Care.
