Looking for either UK based or experienced overseas histopathologists - this role can be offered on either a locum (fixed-term) contract or as a substantive role with AAC Panel interview.
Consultants preparing for CESR can also be accommodated - dependent on experience.
The Opportunity
All positions will be offered on a 10PA, forty hours per week contract, and consultants with special interest in gynecology, upper and lower GI, dermatopathology, urology, breast and head & neck are of particular interest.
Please note however - experienced consultants with different special interests can be accommodated.
You will be expected to report on a range of specimens but to develop in three areas of particular interest. There is also scope for much teaching experience.
The Requirements
Both overseas & UK trained consultants can be considered - whilst familiarization with UK, US or Canadian reporting systems is essential, even if by proxy via experience in a different country to the above.
Qualifications held should be FRCPath or an overseas equivalent and candidates must be comfortable with high volume caseload.

Comprised of a team of 12 current histopathology consultants, this is a moment of huge growth for the Trust as they look to incorporate another laboratory.
The team contains consultants with diverse experience & training from the UK, Spain, France, South Africa, India and the Middle East. Management and clinical staff work hard to engender an empowering and supportive work environment.
Accreditations
The laboratory is approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for pre-registration and specialist training in Cellular Pathology.
The department has full UKAS/ISO accreditation. The Department is HTA compliant and HFEA accredited and takes part in benchmarking exercises.

The Pathology Services comprises four pathology laboratories. These laboratories are responsible for providing pathology services to both acute hospitals and local general practitioners. Additionally, certain laboratories within the network offer specialized services to the broader NHS and engage in research studies and trials. As part of a significant initiative within the NHS, pathology services in England are undergoing reorganization, transitioning into larger local network models. This restructuring has led to the establishment of 29 pathology units nationwide.

The Pathology Service was established following the Lord Carter review of Pathology services in England, aiming to reduce overtesting, enhance resilience, and lower costs. amalgamates staff, services, and IT platforms from four trusts to enhance pathology quality in the Black Country, serving 1.4 million individuals and conducting 60 million tests annually. It underwent a comprehensive IT system overhaul to facilitate integrated services, embrace new technologies, and expedite laboratory results.
The pathology service operates three laboratories offering nationally accredited consultant-led pathology services. With state-of-the-art facilities and IT systems, they garnered commendation from Lord Carter for its efficiency and innovation in pathology. Notably, innovations showcased during Lord Carter\'s visit in 2021 included pre-barcoded tubes for sample tracking and digital automation in microbiology labs.
Lord Carter praised the service as a model of service integration and technological advancement, emphasizing the importance of technology, including artificial intelligence, in expediting diagnostics. He commended the leadership and dedication of the staff, highlighting their achievements and commitment to patient care. The evidence is there to be seen, as latest figures show they scored 92 per cent compliance on a dashboard provided by NHS Improvement, ranking it one of the best performing services in the country

Experienced Pathology Consultants from around the globe are encouraged to apply for consultant roles in one of the largest Foundation Trusts in the South East of England. The trust actively seeks experienced consultants, whether or not they are currently on the specialist register, with a commitment to supporting those not on the register for CESR if that is their preference. This Trust, boasting nearly 10,000 staff and an annual budget exceeding £715 million in 2019/20, operates two large general hospitals in the East of England that consistently perform well according to their CQC reports.
The Histopathology department at this Trust is on a trajectory of advancement, aiming to incorporate the latest technologies and innovations to meet the current and future challenges of the modern NHS. An exciting collaboration with a large teaching hospital and tertiary center in China is underway, promising extensive opportunities for research and teaching within the Histopathology department. The post holder will play a crucial role in surgical pathology and cytopathology, engaging with a dynamic and multidisciplinary team.
The work environment within the Histopathology department is characterized by surgical cut-up performed by Consultant Pathologists, Specialty Registrars, and Biomedical Scientists. Two biomedical scientists have completed the Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological dissection (cut-up), with ongoing training for another. Technical staff handle small biopsies, while Consultant Pathologists report all FNA and non-cervical cytology specimens. Although there is no sub-specialization in surgical histology or diagnostic cytology at present, lead pathologists for each cancer site act as contact points within the department, actively participating in multidisciplinary meetings. Importantly, there is no on-call commitment, and the post holder has the option to undertake coronial post-mortem examinations by direct agreement with local coroners services.
Currently, there are six consultant pathologists, with capacity for two more, including the current vacancy. The Histopathology and Blood Science services are fully accredited by UKAS, participating in both interpretative and technical EQA schemes. The hospital itself holds HTA approval as an institution.

This Histopathology job is open to both international applications and UK-based doctors, though those with European Specialist or FRCPath qualifications are most encouraged to apply.
