Job Description

Join an established NHS team providing excellent Respiratory care in the Midlands. Applications are welcome from UK and International candidates - CESR is supported & consultant pulmonology experience is essential.

This is an opportunity to work with a major acute hospital which offers a range of acute services and has delivered care from its current main hospital site since 1793. This NHS Trust provides general acute services for a population of 380,000. 

You will join an existing team of NHS consultants providing general and specialist Respiratory services to the people of the city and region.

The hospital is based in the centre of a vibrant and prosperous city with something for everyone, including access to schooling and a thriving University. WHAT IS THE RESPIRATORY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE? 
The chest clinic and respiratory lab are staffed by Consultants (one with additional responsibilities in intensive care), Specialist Registrars, Specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists, Respiratory Physiologists, Clinic Nurse, Health Care Assistants and a range of administration and secretarial staff. The team is also supported by TB nurses and Lung Cancer Nurse Specialists, and a Thoracic Surgeon from Leicester.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU? 
CESR Support is a prominent feature of the role and a personalised approach will be rolled out to help you attain your CESR as quickly as possible. Your job plan will be reviewed on 3 - 6 monthly basis, which will include establish the areas of evidence and support required to help with your progression towards CESR. 
Opportunity to develop knowledge in sub-specialty preferences are also encouraged.

LOCAL AREA:
The city is a rapidly growing county town. It has a fascinating blend of rich heritage, distinguished history and all the energy and vigour you would expect of one of the fastest growing, modern, commercial towns in the UK. The county is part of a designated government growth area, which will see significant development and consequent population growth over the next 25 years. The population of the town is predicted to increase by more than 50,000 people by 2021 so you will always be kept busy!

If you like sports, the city has successful Rugby Union and County Cricket Teams for you to go and watch, as well as a slightly less successful Football team. For theatre and film aficionados, considerable investment is being made into a new shopping park just outside of Northampton, housing the county’s only iMax cinema, and there is an “arts” cinema situated in the town centre. 

If you have children, local schools are good and the hospital has crèche facilities. There is also a gym and swimming pool on the hospital site.

    Comprised of a team of 12 current histopathology consultants, this is a moment of huge growth for the Trust as they look to incorporate another laboratory. The team contains consultants with diverse experience & training from the UK, Spain, France, South Africa, India and the Middle East. Management and clinical staff work hard to engender an empowering and supportive work environment. Using a state of the art time management and reporting system with state of the art equipment across three laboratories - the services are part digitalised. Full digitalisation is expected in within 12-18 months. The laboratory is approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for pre-registration and specialist training in Cellular Pathology. The department has full UKAS/ISO accreditation. The Department is HTA compliant and HFEA accredited and takes part in benchmarking exercises.

    WHAT IS THE NHS TRUST LIKE? 

    The NHS Trust was formed in August 2010 through the integration of two health services. Currently the NHS Trust employs 3,600 that provides services for a population of over 360,000 people who are relatively young with a high level of ethnic diversity. The NHS Trust provides more than 100 specialist services and is home to the borough’s only Emergency Department and 24/7 maternity services, including a labour ward, midwifery-led birth centre and the home birthing team. They also offer outpatient care, including diagnostic services, physiotherapy and ophthalmology services, alongside an onsite GP surgery.

    WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE? 

    The Department of Respiratory Medicine is a team of five full time Consultants who are responsible for the delivery of COPD, Lung Cancer, Pleural and TB services in this Trust. The junior medical team comprise one Specialty Registrar, a Trust Grade registrar, one CMT Senior House Officer, one FY2, three FY1 doctors and a physician associate. The department has a dedicated chest x-ray facilities, and a lung function laboratory. They also have a state-of-the-art endoscopy suite that accommodates full diagnostic bronchoscopy and EBUS facilities.

    The ward currently has 27 beds on one of their sites, including four negative pressure side rooms, and provides acute non-invasive ventilation (NIV). There are also 14 beds on another site. The in-patient work also involves reviewing ward referrals. The respiratory firm receives a large number of ward referrals (20-25 per week) from other medical teams. The TB caseload is 100 notifications per year. The TB team is well staffed by 4 WTE nurses & 0.6 WTE case worker to provide latent TB screening, screening for immunosuppressive therapies, direct-observed therapy, community outreach as well as inpatient support.

    The post holder is expected to lead the development of an outpatient sleep and ventilation service. The post holder is expected to provide General Internal Medicine and specialist respiratory and TB medicine service; this includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department and the patient flow across the Directorate.

    Living in the area means that you will never be short of something to do! The area is a bustling area and offers a great selection of shops, restaurants, transport links and leisure facilities. The successful candidate can enjoy a jog in the local parks. There are a variety of pubs and clubs located in the town centre. Residents also have access to some excellent outdoors locations.

    The area is a trendy, up-and-coming area on the road to becoming the golden town of London with the government dedicating a £5.7 billion regeneration budget to build new homes, hotels and public spaces including a new Westfield shopping centre. It’s a great place to visit and an even greater place to buy a home. Croydon is also part of London’s premier tram network. A unique way to explore the area as a visitor. Connecting to Wimbledon, Beckenham and Merton, as many as 30 million people use the tram every year.
