Job Description

An excellent opportunity an high-calibre & innovative Consultant in Haematology to join a high-performing department where there are a lot of learning opportunities. The department works closely together to ensure the delivery of high standard care to their patients, as well as high-quality analytical service to clinicians. The laboratory is fully CPA accredited, and offers clinical guidance and advice. The department is part of an NHS Foundation Trust that is rated \"Good\" over all by the CQC. 

The post is suitable for candidates holding specialisation in the EEA, or for experienced IMGs looking to complete CESR.

WHAT IS THE NHS FOUNDATION TRUST LIKE? 

The NHS Foundation Trust was formed through the merger of two big NHS Foundation Trusts. The merger took place in 2020, and this brought many benefits for patients and opportunities for staff. The main hospital was erected on the site of the an infirmary that was originally opened in 1803 providing accommodation for 38 patients. The main hospital has continued to expand with extensive redevelopment and new builds.

The NHS Foundation Trust\'s hospitals provides a full range of acute services, with beds for Care of the Elderly, ENT, General Medicine, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Neonatal, Obstetrics, Oncology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Vascular Surgery, Breast Surgery and Urology. There is a full Level 2 A&E Department, with a recently opened Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit. The Critical Care Complex provides both High Dependency and Intensive Care beds to a maximum capacity of 12 beds.

The hospital has approximately 400 bed beds, serving a population of approximately 270,000 across Bedfordshire and surrounding areas (with a 900,000 catchment for vascular services) of which 24 are maternity, 16 are paediatric, ten are critical care and 28 are day-case beds. The hospital has over 2500 members of staff (making it the largest local employer in Bedford) and a current turnover of approximately £205m. The hospital enjoys strong community support with over 200 volunteers at the hospital and over £6 million being raised by the independent Bedford Hospitals Charity over the past 10 years.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE? 

The haematology department is very supportive, friendly and progressive in their plans for future development and has recently begun a very close working relationship with another large University Hospital. The haematology team provides support to the Day Treatment Unit and patients attending for blood transfusion, platelets and other procedures. There is also a major collaboration with a prestigious teaching hospital and cancer centre nearby and MDTs are also held in conjunction via video calling. 

The Medical team consists of 2 consultant haematologists and 1 Clinical fellow in Haematology. Haematologists cover 8 clinics and 2 bone marrow clinics weekly. The department has strong clinical networks with Luton & Dunstable. In January 2006, a £7m redevelopment of Pathology Services was completed. This laboratory building incorporates Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Histopathology, Cytopathology and a Mortuary. 

The post holder will work with the haematologists and clinical nurse specialists to support haematology clinics and bone marrow clinics. The post holder will also help with inpatient care. Full support will be available from the consultants. There will be plenty of learning opportunity. The post holder will work closely with the clinical nurse specialists, consultant haematologists and other team members to deliver a high standard of care to patients. The successful candidate will provide a patient focused service to include assessment, treatment, education and follow-up services for the specific patient groups and liaising with Primary Care.

The department have a strong track record of supporting overseas doctors with their CESR application and running a Level 2 service with local connections to major centres, they offer a gentler pace of work whilst giving the opportunity to engage with much larger local specialist centres. Opportunities for teaching, service development, and sub-specialty development are there and can be discussed with the service leads, however anyone with an interest in academia will be welcomed and supported in post.

    The Haematology Department offers a broad spectrum of tests for the diagnosis and monitoring diseases, and response to therapy. The Department offers outpatient, day case and inpatient facilities. The service is led by a Clinical Director and supported by Consultants and Associated Specialist Staff.

    A well-run and state of the art pathology collaborative in the East Midlands are actively seeking a consultant haematologist to join an existing team of 8 consultants.

    This is a replacement for a consultant with an interest in Multiple Myeloma (Myeloma lead for RDH), though candidates with other areas of interest may be considered taking into account the service needs and job plans.

    The Haematology department currently provides care up to Level 2b (BCSH 2010), with plans for a shared care arrangement, repatriating autologous stem cell transplant patients at day +1, to be implemented in the near future.

    The successful candidate will be expected to lead the myeloma autologous stem cell program and is a  full time post, however any candidates who wish to work less than full time will be considered and supported. 

    Requirements for this position are:

    • MRCP or equivalent
    • FRCPath in Haematology
    • IETLS or OET

    Haematologists with senior experience practicing at consultant level are invited to apply.

    International candidates with experience at consultant level and FRCPath can be considered for locum consultant roles.

    UK based candidates not yet on the specialist register will be supported with their CESR application if required.
