Job Description

This is an excellent consultant opportunity for either clinical or medical oncologists to join a high-performing and well-regarded NHS Trust in the East of England. Applicants on the specialist register with CCT or CESR, or those not yet on the register can be considered, as the trust will support overseas candidates. The trust is the one of the largest NHS organisations in the East of England region, with their scale of size providing exciting opportunities for research, development, innovation, education and training. They have a track record of recruiting the best calibre consultants from within the UK and from overseas.


The Trust in the East of England with two main acute hospitals and has traditionally scored highly on their CQC reports and cancer waiting targets. Now with the delays to cancer care caused by covid-19 there is a real urgency to recruit and help recitfy some of the cancer targets that are being missed.


This role will be based at the larger of the two sites, and if successful you would be joining a team of eight oncology consultants in their specialist cancer unit on site. The consultants are currently supported by a specialty doctor team and are a team of nine consultants total.

The post holder will work according to an agreed job plan of 10 PA (40-hours per week) with a minimum of 8.5 PAs dedicated to Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 SPAs (supporting professional activities). There will also be some on call commitment to this role which can be discussed during interview. The role will embrace all aspects of Oncology including solid tumour chemotherapy and technically advanced radiotherapy (if a clinical oncologist).

The primary requirement is for Upper & Lower GI cancers and have an open interest to other tumour sites


The county and local town are a fantastic location for doctors and their families wishing to live in the East of England, close to London but without the high cost of living and property that is associated with life in London. You will find all the amenities required for a family in the region, with excellent schools, transport links and availability of housing both short and long term. You can live in the pretty and historic local town, or in the various little towns and villages dotted around the region. Neither urban town life or rural life is ever too far away and there is something for everyone here!


This role is primarily looking for clinical consultants on the specialist register for oncology however they can consider applicants from medical oncologists with similar interests, or doctors not yet on the specialist register.

For those not on the specialist register, support can be provided towards their CESR application 

Consultants on the specialist register will be given autonomy and will freedom to develop their special interests, with access to additional leadership, research and teaching duties available for those that want it. 

Regardless of specialism, all consultants will be fully integrated members of the oncology team and receive full induction process and will be involved in clinical audit and governance.


Requirements for this role are the following:
  • MRCP or equivalent if Medical Oncologist
  • FRCR or equivalent if Clinical Oncologist
  • Extensive experience in oncology 
  • Previous consultant experience
  • Interest in Urology, Upper GI and Hepatobiliary Cancer are preferred, other preference on cancer site can be accommodated however
