WHAT IS THE NHS TRUST LIKE? 

The NHS Trust was formed in 1999, bringing together their four hospitals. In 2019, the NHS Trust was rated as "Good" in over all by the CQC. The NHS Trust aims to continuously improve and go from "good" to "outstanding". The NHS Trust is a family of more than 7,000 staff & colleagues. There are nearly 900,000 people coming to their hospitals for care and treatment every year, their almost 5,000 staff and 500 volunteers work around the clock to keep their busy hospitals running smoothly. 

The NHS Trust is a teaching hospital that offers an extensive range of services to over 490,000 people in two major areas. The NHS Trust operates two busy general hospitals - which both have have A&E Deparments and Maternity Sevices, and run services from other locations as well. The NHS Trust works with local GPs, mental health services, community providers and local authorities, with the joint aim of preventing local people from becoming unwell, and when they do, that they receive the right care, in the right place, with the right support.

Being a teaching hospitals, they play a key role in the education and training of tomorrow's doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Two of their sites work in partnership with two organisations in south London to deliver high quality education and research. They support the education of more medical students than any other teaching hospital in south London. Both of their main hospitals have 24-hour accident and emergency (A&E) departments.


WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE? 

The department provides comprehensive diagnostic histopathology, non-gynaecological cytology and anatomical pathology services to two of their hospitals as well as to satellite hospitals, HM Coroner, GPs, as well as community and outreach clinics in two of their respective areas.The team is committed to quality of care and subscribe to nationally agreed standards of reporting and service delivery, and participate in quality assurance programmes, where available. 

The team can provide an extensive range of special techniques/services including immunohistochemistry, frozen sections, macrosectioning for complex lesions, lymph node recovery by lipid extraction, immunofluorescence, with facilities to process native and transplant renal biopsies with off-site electron microscopy with FNA support where clinically indicated. Their main lab is located at the main hospital, but they also have a satellite lab at their other main hospital, where urgent specimens, frozen sections and non-gynae cytology can be processed. 

The post holder should have broad based experience and support for head and neck and non-gynaecological cytology would be particularly welcome

    The work environment within the Histopathology department is characterized by surgical cut-up performed by Consultant Pathologists, Specialty Registrars, and Biomedical Scientists. Two biomedical scientists have completed the Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological dissection (cut-up), with ongoing training for another. Technical staff handle small biopsies, while Consultant Pathologists report all FNA and non-cervical cytology specimens. Although there is no sub-specialization in surgical histology or diagnostic cytology at present, lead pathologists for each cancer site act as contact points within the department, actively participating in multidisciplinary meetings. Importantly, there is no on-call commitment, and the post holder has the option to undertake coronial post-mortem examinations by direct agreement with local coroners services.

    Currently, there are six consultant pathologists, with capacity for two more, including the current vacancy. The Histopathology and Blood Science services are fully accredited by UKAS, participating in both interpretative and technical EQA schemes. The hospital itself holds HTA approval as an institution.

    Are you eligible for this role?
    To be considered for this role you must meet the following requirements:

    • Specialist Registration in Histopathology or
    • FRCPath and extensive consultant experience or
    • GMC registration with reporting experience in a similar healthcare system
    Experience from similar healthcare systems with similar reporting methods will be considered for these roles. Any consultant pathologists not on the specialist register for histopathology will be supported for CESR if that is their desire.

    A leading NHS hospital in South West England is looking for a Consultant in Histopathology with an interest in general histopathology and non-gynae cytology, with opportunities to develop a special interest. The Histopathology department consists of a team of highly experienced consultants, supported by middle-grade doctors. This Histopathology job is open to both international and UK-based applicants, though those with FRCPath or equivalent qualifications are particularly encouraged to apply.

    Anyone requiring portfolio support (formally known as CESR) can have their required support discussed on a case-by-case basis.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DETAILS

    FRCPath or equivalent qualification and CCT within 6 months of interview (or international equivalent) with experience in general histopathology and non-gynae cytology are required for this role, and The salary will be between the standard NHS Consultant pay scale, with salary dependent on experience or grade.

    A teaching hospital in South England are looking to appoint a consultant histopathologist on a remote basis to report digitally for uro-pathology, skin, and breast pathology cases. Should candidate wish to be based on site, or with a hybrid work pattern this can of course be facilitated. 

    Cellular Pathology Services

    The Cellular and Anatomical Pathology Department encompasses histopathology, cytopathology, neuropathology, and anatomical pathology. Annually, it processes approximately 38,000 surgical biopsies, 2,000 non-cervical cytology samples, and conducts around 1,100 postmortem examinations.

    The department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including consultant pathologists, biomedical scientists, and technical specialists. Services provided involve diagnostic evaluations of tissue samples to identify diseases such as cancer and precancerous conditions, utilizing techniques like special stains, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular methods. The department\'s facilities are equipped to deliver timely and accurate diagnoses, with most straightforward biopsies reported within 14 working days.
