Job Description

Opportunity for a consultant dermatologists to attain CESR or CCT and work as either a Specialty Doctor or Consultant (depending on experience) for one of the largest trusts in the region.

What is the trust like?
This NHS Foundation Trust has delivered dermatology services to patients across the South East of England for some time.

This is an exciting time to be joining the trust. The newly formed trust was created on July 2018 from a merger of x2 large hospitals.

This larger scale will provide you with opportunities to develop skills and experience, and their 'our time matters' philosophy will help them to see patients at the right time, attract and retain the best people and provide the latest treatments locally.

What is the Department like? 
The Dermatology Department spans across both hospital sites. 

On one site the Dermatology Service is delivered from a stand-alone department with 8 clinic rooms, 2 minor operating theatres and consultant office space.  The unit has its own dedicated administrative and medical nursing staff along with a separate outpatients waiting area.  The service further benefits from running plastic surgery clinics alongside the dermatology service offering an improved pathway to all patients.

In addition to the above the service benefits from additional area for patch testing phototherapy and PDT all co-located within the dermatology department.

They are redesigning service location across Colchester to run dermatology services within a newly developed Primary Care Centre, the service will offer dedicated clinic rooms along with minor operating facilities. 

The department currently has establishment for 5 full time consultants, 4 clinical assistants, GPwSI and 8 Nurse Practitioners with their own service.

They work closely with the plastic surgery department on both sites with links to neighbouring NHS trusts

The Dermatology service have the benefit of an extremely skilled and experienced nursing team who have their own general nurse-led clinics across both sites.

Specific nurse-led clinics are also in place for acne and renal transplant screening as well as skin biopsy procedures. There are plans for dedicated nurse-led biologics clinic and we welcome the support of consultant staff to further develop the nursing posts.

They have two established clinical nurse specialist in skin cancer, one on each site.

The local General Practitioners are very supportive of the department and the hospital and are continuing to develop closer ties following our successful bid to provide an integrated dermatology model in primary care settings.

The Dermatology team is part of the MSK and Specialist Surgery Division and is proud of its aspirant and encouraging atmosphere. The team has particularly excellent results in skin cancer outcomes, working alongside an acclaimed Oncology department.

Across the Trust they are also committed to supporting their clinicians in building and developing their private practice alongside NHS caseload allowing a hospital delivered location to these private services.

What opportunities are there for me? 
This is a great opportunity for dermatologists to work towards a senior consultant role or gain entry to the specialist register via CESR or CCT in Dermatology.

The ideal candidate will have ambitions to lead the team in redesigning the dermatology service to work towards an integrated community service across the region whilst developing and supporting staff across the Specialist Doctor development programme and nurse practitioner trainees.

There is the possibility of clinical lead position available in the coming years also.

Am I eligible for the role?

Requirements for this position are:

  • MRCP (desirable not essential)
  • Eligibility for GMC registration
  • Extensive experience in dermatology with some management experience would be welcome but not essential.

    Dermatology Team & Department

    The Dermatology service sees 16,500 appointments yearly for diagnosing and treating various skin conditions, including skin cancers, lesions, eczema, psoriasis, urticaria, and Vulval conditions. The Dermatology Department is offering outpatient clinics and a comprehensive array of treatments, including minor operations. Additionally, a limited number of clinics and treatments are available at the newly established outpatient facility located in one of their sites.

    The Dermatology service currently has over 5000 2ww Outpatient attendances per annum for the diagnosis and treatment of potential skin cancer. Outpatient clinics are run from both sites with an inpatient in-reach service run across their two sites. Facilities within the dermatology department include modern outpatient clinics, diagnostic services, and treatment rooms, ensuring a comfortable and efficient environment for patients and staff alike. They also collaborate closely with other specialties within the trust to provide multidisciplinary care when required, ensuring holistic management of complex cases.

    There are two Specialty Doctors and four specialist nurses in post. The team is also supported by a team of GP’s with Special Interests out in the community. There is good secretarial and clinic clerk support.

    The post holder will have a shared designated medical secretary and a shared office with a consultant colleague, along with equal access to these medical, nursing and clerical support staff.
