A Hospital in Eastern England is looking for a Consultant Cellular pathologist to join their pathology department and team. They are considering either UK or overseas-trained doctors for a permanent contract type. The trust will support with CESR support for those who are looking to attain CESR and Specialist Registration. WHAT IS THE NHS FOUNDATION TRUST LIKE?
This Trust was formed through the merger of two previous NHS Trusts which took place in April 2020. It serves a population of around 270,000 across the region and surrounding areas, with a catchment of 900,000 for vascular services, 24 of which are maternity, 16 are paediatric, ten are critical care and 28 are day-case beds. Its core local authority populations are around 160,000 and 260,000.
The hospital is a medium sized with approximately 660 inpatient beds. It serves a highly diverse geography close to London, is a highly performing Trust with flagship emergency services and a reputation for consistent operational and financial delivery.
The hospital provides a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services, including Emergency Department and maternity services. Last year it provided healthcare services for over 90,000 admitted patients, over 400,000 outpatients and Emergency Department attendees and we delivered over 5,300 babies.
All inpatient services and most outpatient services are provided at this site.
THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM
The Trust has re-organised the structure of its Clinical Service Lines, including Pathology. Each clinical Service Line has a Clinical Lead/Clinical Director (CD) and managerial support. In addition to dedicated support from finance, information and HR teams, each CSL has a monthly directorate meeting, to provide a forum for discussion and decision making including issues of clinical performance, clinical governance, finances and general service line business. Executive Review Meetings are established to foster continuous improvement of services in terms of quality, performance and financial effectiveness.
The pathology department has recently secured £2.7million funding for the full implementation of digital histopathology reporting and this is currently being implemented which will be of benefit to the department and consultants for future working. This will ensure that the Department is well placed to benefit from future developments in digital aids for histopathologists including AI. Participation in this project would be warmly welcomed.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE AT BEDFORDSHIRE HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
The Trust is committed to supporting CME / CPD for consultants. There is a Training and Education Task Force at which this specific item is discussed in depth. It is expected that consultants will attend meetings and courses in their area of special interest and that the appointee will register for the CME / CPD programme within the specialty.
There is also a strong clinical governance system in place in the Directorate. The appointee will contribute to Quality, Risk & Clinical Governance within the department in line with national and Trust strategy/guidance and CQC requirements and based on evidence and best practice. The appointee will be encouraged to develop clinical audit and to have regular departmental audit meetings.
Research interests are also encouraged. The hospital has academic links two nearby Universities. A new University/Postgraduate Medical School has been opened with the remit of actively supporting Consultants in pursuing their research interests and to become involved in multi centre research trials. The research department has a dedicated research nurse who is able to identify and support relevant national studies/trials. The appointee is encouraged to develop their own research interests and to become involved in multi-centre research trials.
The new appointee will also have the opportunity for the development of teaching experience as they will be expected to contribute to teaching and monitoring as well as to teaching of other laboratory staff and medical and nursing staff throughout the Trust.
