An exciting opportunity to join a medicine division in ensuring comprehensive care for stroke patients. As consultant for the service the postholder will be responsible for supporting the development of the stroke services within the trust and with the community to provide seamless care for patients presenting with stroke.

    We are recruiting for an experienced and motivated Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine to join a friendly and enthusiastic team in the Midlands. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who are interested in securing CESR within 1 - 2 years. 

    What is the Trust like?

    The Trust is one of the largest acute and community providers in the West Midlands having more than 850 beds on one of their 3 sites in the area. The trust has had a new £38 million Emergency Department was opened at the Hospital. Boasting 30 treatment rooms for minor injuries, 18 for major injuries and a resuscitation area for adults, as well as a dedicated paediatric area for children, one of the largest in the region.

    The trust has also been rated outstanding in caring in February 2002 by the CQC following an inspection. Additionally in 2018, a new 2.4 million Stroke Unit opened at one of their sites, now all suspected stroke cases from the near by cities are treated in this specialist unit. 

    What is the Department Like? 
    Our Stroke service provides Hyper-acute and Acute Care for the combined populations of all the peripheral areas with the hospital  which has a combined population of around 600000 people. 
    The department provides a 24/7 service for stroke thrombolysis and thrombectomy pathway consisting of 2 ring-fenced HASU beds for Stroke admissions out of 12 designated HASU beds with a dedicated consultant as a part of rota. The department also consist 24/7 access to CT clinics, 3 CT scanners along with 3 MRI scanners (4th MRI is currently being deployed). In Addition to that, the department have rapid access to outpatient CTAs and have a very efficient pathway with the Vascular service for rapid carotid endartectomy intervention if that is required.

South of Wolverhampton, the City of Worcester is easily accessible, and to the west north-Wales can be reached in just over an hour.   • Locum Consultant in Stroke Medicine (CESR Support )

    We are recruiting for an experienced and motivated Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine to join a friendly and enthusiastic team in the North West of England. 
    This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who are interested in securing CESR within 1 - 2 years. The post involves out-patient and in-patient duties and a regular commitment to both in-reach into the medical admissions unit and on-call for general medicine.

    What is the trust like?

    The Trust was formed on 1 October 2019 with the merger of two large tertiary trusts partnering with wider areas of the North West of England to become one of the first 14 areas nationally to be confirmed as an Integrated Care System. The trust services to a half a million people. We’re responsible for delivering over 70 services across 15 main locations and we employ over 6500 members of staff.

    What is the department like? 

    The Trust is excited to be developing a Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at the Cumberland Infirmary site which will comprise a 10 bedded HAS unit at CIC, a further 25 acute and rehabilitation beds, and a further 15 acute and rehabilitation beds at WCH. If you successful, you will join the newly forming team and have the opportunity to contribute to this exciting development for our patients in both the Cumberland Infirmary and the West Cumberland Hospital. You would also be instrumental in the establishment of a high quality stroke service across North Cumbria. The planned 7-day service model will allow the delivery of 7-day stroke / TIA clinics which will rapidly speed up diagnosis and therapeutic intervention, and will provide an integrated pathway into community services.

    This development was implemented in the last few years, with the new service becoming increasingly embedded into Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) specialist ESSD rehabilitation that is delivered at local level under the joint management of the ICC and the ESSD coordination team.

    What is the Trust look like?

    The NHS trust situated in the North West England consists of 4 main hospitals providing services for acute hospitals and also local GPs. All our hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. The trust has won the Diverse Company Award in the National Diversity Awards (NDAs) in 2020 welcoming IMGs from different part of the world to join their team. In July 2015 the trust was the first, and so far only, to get an increase in the NHS tariff for its services agreed by Monitor (NHS) because of its "increased costs associated with this trust running health services across multiple sites in rural locations" and this is expected to increase the trust's income by more than £20 million per year. The trust consists of Emergency Department, the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), the Acute Frailty Unit (AFU), Huggett Suite (Acute Stroke), Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and a Medical Same Day Emergency Care unit (SDEC). Currently, the trust sees approximately 350 Stroke admissions per year to one of the hospital

    What does the stroke department look like?

    The stroke service consists of six acute stroke beds and an assessment bay benefitting from an investment of £1million in 2017. The post holder would be expected to contribute to daily weekday Stroke Consultant rounds, and the Stroke Consultants provide face-to-face Thrombolysis within normal weekday working hours and the Emergency Department team access the tele stroke service out of hours for support. There is a 7-day Advanced Nurse Practitioner / Stroke specialist nurse service attending all stroke patients presenting in ED. The stroke unit has a combined of 32 beds - 6 acute and 25 rehab along with neurosurgical and thrombectomy services available at one of the hospitals. The division provides a wide range of techniques and services, including endocrine investigations; DEXA scanning; GI endoscopy; bronchoscopy; chemotherapy; a cardiac, respiratory and oesophageal function laboratory; and ward-based non-invasive positive pressure ventilation.
