Job Description

An excellent opportunity for an experienced Consultant in Care of the Elderly - Geriatric Medicine to join a Health Board in North Wales that promotes equality and diversity. The post if suitable for overseas consultants, including candidates who are pursuing CESR. Specialists in Care of the Elderly - Geriatric Medicine holding a specialist certification would be suitable for this post, based on experience entering at either Specialty Doctor or Consultant grade. Overseas applications from experienced Specialty Doctors and Consultants are welcomed. 

WHAT IS HEALTH BOARD LIKE? 

The Health Board is largest health organisation in Wales, that are developing an integrated health service which provides excellent care delivered in partnership with the public and other statutory and third sector organisations. The Health Board have a budget of £1.3 billion and a workforce of over 17,000 staff. Providing primary, community, mental health and acute hospital services for the population of around 700,000 across of North Wales. They continuously develop their workforce so that it has the right skills and operates in a research-rich learning culture. Besides their three main hospital sites, they are also responsible for community hospitals, health centres, clinics, mental health units, community teams, GP practices and other NHS services provided by dentists, opticians and pharmacists. They plan to improve the health of the population, with particular focus upon the most vulnerable in our society.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE? 

The department is a growing department who currently provide a wide range of sub-specialities including Stroke Medicine, falls, movement disorders, orthogeriatrics, rehabilitation, front door frailty. The team is keen to develop further services –areas of future focus include POPs, in-reach into the older persons mental health unit, and community geriatrics. The Care of the Elderly team covers one general geriatric ward which has 27 beds, one acute stroke unit with 27 beds, and two rehabilitation wards in another site. They also have beds in several community hospitals around the area.

The team is consist of 1 Specialty Doctor (attached to the Stroke Unit), 4 Specialist Registrars, and 11 SHO grades (a mix of F2s, CMT, and GPVTS trainees). These staff rotate around the department and will make up the junior doctor team supporting the new appointees –on a daily basis there will be at least one SHO attached to each rehabilitation ward, and two SHOs based 2 other wards, as well as two SHOs with the frailty team.

The post holder is expected to work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and managers to further develop Care of the Elderly services. There are many areas of future growth for the department and a successful candidate will be welcome to play an integral part in shaping future services. The successful candidate will have dedicated secretarial support and an office, and will be provided with their own PC with IT facilities.

    • Contribute to teaching and training of junior doctors and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
    • Engage with community care teams to support integrated patient care across primary and secondary services.
