WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Department receives requests that cover a wide spectrum of pathology including: General Surgery, Colorectal (including Bowel Cancer Screening), Breast (also Breast Screening cases), Dermatology, Respiratory, Head and Neck, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Endocrine, Orthopaedics, Diagnostic and Transplant Renal Biopsies, Soft Tissue Tumours, Urology and Endoscopic and CT guided biopsies. Approximately 22% of the requests are received from General Practitioners with approximately 78% of requests being generated from within the Trust. The team consists of 16 Consultants, 2 Dissection Practitioners and 3 Dissection Practitioners in Training. The successful candidate will be responsible for the dissection and reporting of the cases of chosen specialist areas. There is also a commitment required to report non specialist general cases. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary team meetings in their chosen areas of special interest.

This specialist cancer centre are looking for full-time, permanent or locum Oncologists in either Medical or Clinical. THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:
The department is responsible for SACT services for adults with solid tumours in the region of Wales. The majority (60%) of day-case services are delivered on site, while there is a long-established network of outreach sites in LHB acute and community hospitals, and based with 3rd-sector providers.
Based on its professional and public reputation for delivering excellence in terms of patient and staff experience, the Trust has has been selected to lead the ‘Transforming Cancer Services’ programme and to build a new hospital. The new site will be a £200million pound development and will open in the coming years. It will be nearly twice the size of the current hospital and will be equipped with brand new, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities
The new site will have 10 new linear accelerators, 2 CT and 2 MRI scanners to support precision image-guided and adaptive radiotherapy. There will be a dedicated clinical trials treatment unit including a 10-bedded early phase trials unit, and 2 isotope cubicles for molecular radiotherapy treatments.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
Doctors wishing to pursue specialty training in either Medical or Clinical Oncology will be served well by time working in such a developed cancer centre. That being said, the department have overseen the CESR progress of many overseas doctors and have good understanding and experience of it. For more senior doctors holding FRCR or MRCP qualifications this may be the best route to attaining Specialist Registration in your oncological specialty.
The Trust provides fantastic career development opportunities and once middle grade doctors have attained their CESR in Clinical or Medical - there is real opportunity to begin specialising and leading on any major cancer site within the NHS cancer pathway. Further more, with the adoption of new treatment technologies anyone appointed will be able to develop service delivery across a number of systemic and radiotherapy treatments to ensure the continuous delivery of a high quality, effective and efficient services. The Trust also has a well-established oncology research department, providing the opportunity for the post holder to run and develop clinical trials.

Acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units across the NHS Trust were all rated as 'good' by the CQC. The services were found to be providing effective care. All patients had a care plan which was regularly updated and patients had access to a range of care and treatment options which were in line with national guidance. Staff are supervised effectively and have access to additional specialist training, including CESR support.
Staff in the department and across the general adult services are caring. Feedback from patients and carers was consistently positive about staff attitudes. WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TEAM LIKE?
The Children and Young People’s Service provides a single service to all children and young people aged 0-18 years living in the city, and surrounding area, who present with mental health difficulties. This includes children and young people who may be living in difficult and challenging circumstances.
Services for children and young people with a learning disability are provided through collaboration between the Children and Young People’s Services and Community Learning Disability Team.
Services for children and young people experiencing psychosis are provided through collaboration between Children and Young People’s Services and the Early Intervention in Psychosis Team.
The service is also able to provide:
- Assessment, diagnosis and intervention on a range of mental health issues.
- Intensive response and home-based treatment for those children and young people whose mental health is causing significant concern.
- An intensive Eating Disorder Service to support children and young people on the eating disorder pathway who are at risk of an inpatient admission.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TEAM LIKE?
The Older People’s Community service is delivered through three Community Treatment Teams (CTT). The CTTs comprise multi-professional teams including: Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Support Workers. The CTTs provide a service to people with both functional and/or organic disorders, and are able to work flexibly across geographical boundaries in response to workload pressures. The CTT is supported by the Memory Assessment and Management Service (MAMS). MAMS provides assessment for early cognitive impairment and/or complex cognitive problems associated with other conditions. It operates across the city & region, providing outpatient and home based assessment and treatment services. Additionally, there is a Young Onset Dementia Team which provides specialist follow up for people living with dementia aged under 65.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT DEPARTMENT LIKE?
The team is currently developing towards operating a 24/7 core service and the clinical lead will be expected to work some shifts across 7 days, usual working hours will be 9-5, a level of flexibility will be required. A
close working relationship between Integrated care is essential for delivery of the service, the team acts as the link between mental health and the acute trust, advocating for the mental health of patients. The liaison team provides psychiatric input to the acute hospital for those presenting with a mental health problem (age 16 upwards). An important part of the role is sensitively challenging stigma when faced with it and educating others to enhance understanding.
The successful candidate would be expected to work across the acute hospital, and be involved in the assessment of patients within the emergency department as well as supporting wards.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT INPATIENT WARD LIKE?
This General Adult Ward is an acute mental health inpatient unit based at a rural district general hospital. It has 16 beds for adult men and women providing assessment and treatment by a multi disciplinary team. This acute inpatient unit is designed for men and women with mental health problems arising from functional disorders such as depression, anxiety or psychosis, who require a stay in hospital.
Acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units were all rated as 'good' by the CQC. The services were found to be providing effective care. All patients had a care plan which was regularly updated and patients had access to a range of care and treatment options which were in line with national guidance. Staff are supervised effectively and have access to additional specialist training, including CESR support.
Staff in the department and across the general adult services are caring. Feedback from patients and carers was consistently positive about staff attitudes. The service was organised in a way that ensured staff focussed on interacting and engaging with patients as opposed to administrative tasks. The service is providing care in a way that was responsive to people’s needs. Beds are managed appropriately to ensure that people could access the service when they needed it.
The service is also very well-led. There is a stable management team with managers at all levels who have the skills, knowledge and experience to perform their roles and support new members of the psychiatry team. Ward managers and senior managers are approachable, ensuring you will be well respected, supported and valued.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT INPATIENT WARD LIKE?
Th Unit is a high risk needs-led acute psychiatric ward for the whole of the region based in hub of the region. It has 22 beds providing assessment, care and treatment by a multi-disciplinary team. The unit is a needs-led unit for men and women aged 18 years and over who have a functional mental illness such as depression, anxiety or psychosis and require admission to hospital because they are:
- At risk of immediate and significant self-harm/suicide or self-neglect due to their mental health and/or
- At immediate and significant risk to others due to their mental health.
- In circumstances where there is immediate risk of the breakdown in normal life or support network.
- In circumstances where existing community service user is already receiving a higher level of input due to the level of deterioration of their mental state, or the increased level of risk
- At significant risk of personal vulnerability and exploitation.
- At significant risk of mental health deterioration without mental health intervention.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT LIKE?
The Community Mental Health Team provides an assessment and treatment service for people who are experiencing difficulty with their mental health based on episodic model of care. The CMHT works closely with local Crisis Team, Liaison service and Inpatient services to ensure safe and timely transitions when required. The Community Mental Health Team provides a service for men and women over the age of 18 years who require a period of assessment and treatment.
Patients are generally care coordinated by the wider team but the post holder can expect to be the Lead Professional in caring for some of these patients. Work allocation is divided between the consultants according to the patient’s GP practice, however fairness and equity of caseload is always ensured. The team receives around 25 referrals a week. Each Specialist would be expected to attend one SPA (single point of access) meeting and one PAM (post assessment meeting) on one day per week.

With an extremely active education/teaching programme supported by the consultant team, there is opportunity for IMGs to work towards and complete CESR or enter specialist training. There is a dedicated Medical Education and Development department, running a regional journal club programme and organising a successful rolling programme of updates and innovations. The quality of these attract national participants. The Trust encourages medical staff to access online CPD offered by the College and the British Association for Psychopharmacology.
