Newcastle upon Tyne, often shortened to Newcastle, is one of the most iconic cities in Britain, famous for its industrial heritage, popular nightlife and distinct regional ‘Geordie’ dialect. It is also home to the Northumberland National Park, home to England’s cleanest rivers, clearest air and darkest skies, the stunning Northumberland Coast, with its picturesque coastline known for walking, cycling, water sports and birdwatching opportunities.
This lively city certainly has heaps to offer, ensuring that living in Newcastle will appeal to many different people. Within Newcastle, there are some great towns which offer a combination of busy city and calmer suburban living. Fenham is a large residential area located just 2 miles away from the centre of Newcastle, allowing quick access to city life through strong transport links. Whether you are a walker, biker, bus rider or driver, you’ll find yourself at the heart of the city in under 10 minutes.
Situated in the rain shadow of the North Pennines, Newcastle is amongst the driest cities in the UK. The city can have cool to cold winters, though usually warmer than the rural areas around it, and the winters are often compensated for by warm summers, with very long daylight hours in the summer months, longer than all other major English Cities. Newcastle’s local delicacies include Pease pudding and stottie cake. In 2010, Osborne Road in Jesmond was awarded fourth place in the UK Google Street View awards for the “foodie” category. There has been a noticeable growth in Newcastle’s gourmet restaurant industry in recent years, and the city is one of only seven in the UK with its own Chinatown, appropriately containing many Chinese restaurants.
