An NHS acute hospital in the UK is looking for a Consultant Physician in Care of the Elderly with an interest in Frailty, Orthogeriatrics, or Stroke Medicine. The Geriatric Medicine department comprises a team of experienced consultants supported by a large multidisciplinary team, including middle-grade doctors, therapists, and specialist nurses. This Care of the Elderly role is open to both international applications and UK-based doctors, though those with a Specialist Register membership or suitable postgraduate qualifications are most encouraged to apply.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DETAILS
A postgraduate medical qualification and significant experience in geriatric and general medicine are required for this role. Anyone with an interest in Frailty, Orthogeriatrics, or Stroke Medicine should apply. The salary will be competitive and dependent on experience or grade.
CORE DUTIES OF THIS ROLE
- Manage inpatient care for elderly patients and support acute and outpatient services for frail older adults.
- Conduct same-day emergency care (SDEC) and rapid access outpatient clinics for older patients.
- Join the General Internal Medicine on-call rota and provide peer support within the department.
- Work collaboratively with community and social care teams to optimize care and streamline discharge processes.

WHAT IS THE HEALTH BOARD LIKE?
The Health Board provides healthcare services to a total population of around 372,320 throughout several areas. It provides Acute, Primary, Community, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities services via General and Community Hospitals, Health Centres, GP's, Dentists, Pharmacists and Optometrists and other sites. WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The integrated department of medicine provides inpatient, outpatient and occasional domiciliary consultation services for medical patients of all ages. In-patient and rehabilitation facilities are provided at the main hospital site. There are many acute beds provided for the directorate including a dedicated purpose built 6-bedded coronary care unit and 24 bedded Clinical Decisions Unit. There is also a combined HDU/ITU with a total of 14 beds.
The department is supported by full pathology and radiology services. In addition, the department of physiological medicine carries out electrocardiography, echocardiography, stress testing, Holter monitoring and lung function testing. The biochemistry department works closely with the diabetes department. Physicians with an interest in Elderly Medicine provide a comprehensive service for the elderly in addition to contributing to the acute medical service for all adult age groups.
The post holder’s specific responsibilities would be:
- Acute medical take on a 1:10 rota. Patients are cared for by on-call teams and acute physicians until their care is transferred to the wards where ward based teams care for patients.
- Dementia/frailty ward.
- 20 bedded stroke ward with ASU and rehab beds.
- The geriatric medicine team delivers a front door and community frailty service.
- The development of a Same Day Emergency Care unit will include Frailty pathways
- Very occasionally domiciliary visits are carried out at the request of GPs.
WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN THE REGION?
The Health Board is in an area wherein there are excellent choice of schools and very reasonable property prices while having a picturesque countryside view. The area is home to the Brecon Beacons, National Botanic Gardens of Wales and some of the longest and most beautiful beaches. West Wales provides wonderful lifestyle opportunities.
There are other activities such as climbing and mountain biking, as well as walking, surfing, fishing, sailing and hiking. There are also excellent road and rail connections to London and the larger cities. Wales has a low crime rate and is a safe and friendly place to live and work.
