WHAT IS THE NHS TRUST LIKE?

The Trust has developed massively in the last few years, focussing on driving excellence in care for patients and communities, through its five-year strategy ‘Working Together’. The hospital has recently received substantial investment, with another £58 million expected to be announced in 2022.

As a University Hospital Trust, research, education and training is embedded across the organisation. With a turnover of close to £600m, the Trust provides comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. Some tertiary services are provided to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7,300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?

The Department receives requests that cover a wide spectrum of pathology including: General Surgery, Colorectal (including Bowel Cancer Screening), Breast (also Breast Screening cases), Dermatology, Respiratory, Head and Neck, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Endocrine, Orthopaedics, Diagnostic and Transplant Renal Biopsies, Soft Tissue Tumours, Urology and Endoscopic and CT guided biopsies. Approximately 22% of the requests are received from General Practitioners with approximately 78% of requests being generated from within the Trust.

The team consists of 16 Consultants, 2 Dissection Practitioners and 3 Dissection Practitioners in Training.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the dissection and reporting of the cases of chosen specialist areas. There is also a commitment required to report non specialist general cases. WHAT IS LIFE LIKE ON ENGLAND'S SOUTH COAST?

The area is home of a historic naval warfare force. The port opens onto Spithead, one of the busiest trading harbours in the world, and the naval base is at the heart of a thriving commercial and cultural centre. Just 90 minutes from central London, Portsmouth benefits from good road and rail links, as well as regular ferry services to France and Spain. Portsmouth is home to a thriving artistic community with a medley of museums and theatres.

Developments within the city itself and on the Gosport side of the harbour suggest a vibrant future for the area. Inland from the hospital is the beautiful and relatively unspoilt countryside of rural Hampshire, and the South Downs National Park, and the New Forest National Park is close by.

The area combines the advantages of city life with pleasant villages and seaside towns. There are several first-rate schools both in the state and private sector and it is an excellent place to raise a family.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU AT THE NHS TRUST?

The department and wider trust are extremely keen on assisting Consultants in developing their career. Consultants receive access to CESR support, access to specialty training from world-leading practitioners, and the opportunity to undertake relevant external duties to enhance continued career development.

In addition to the Trust’s medical library, the department holds an extensive library of journals and relevant educational materials to support CPD. The departments are forward-thinking and began utilising SABR for lung primaries and oligometastatic disease in March 2021.
