One of the most in-demand specialties in the NHS, Radiology has rapidly advanced in recent years with technological innovations and widespread availability of sophisticated imaging techniques playing a major part.
Both a diagnostic and interventional specialty, it has links to almost every other department in a hospital.
Specialty training is five years in total (diagnostic, ST1-5) extended an extra year for those that sub-specialise in interventional radiology (ST1-6).
A typical working week as a diagnostic radiologist can include lists for ultrasound, IVUs, CT, MRI and barium/fluoroscopy lists in addition to plain film reporting and clinics. You can expect to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on a 10 PA job plan with inclusion on the general radiology on-call.
Interventional radiologists can expect a variety of IR procedures to be included in addition to their diagnostic duties.
