A Southern English Trust is looking for a Consultant Medical Oncologist with sub-specialty interest in Breast and Gynaecological cancers. There is some flexibility around these areas of interest, with the team being open to discussing other sub-specialties that the new consultant may wish to explore in a potential job plan. They are considering either UK or overseas trained doctors in Medical Oncology for a fixed-term or permanent contract.
The trust will support with CESR and will assist in further sub-specialist training in the NHS. This is a high-performing and supportive department for overseas doctors, or UK-based doctors looking to further careers in the UK.
WHAT IS THE NHS FOUNDATION TRUST LIKE?
This trust provides general, planned, and emergency services to the local population of 365,000. With approximately 2.5 million patients each year, the Trust is one of the largest healthcare providers and employers in the South West.
They are also part of a Integrated Care System. Running acute, community, and primary care services, they are the only integrated provider in our system, so they offer a unique opportunity for an exceptional candidate to join them. WHAT IS THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT LIKE?
The oncology department has the facilities to diagnose and treat many types of cancer in both adults and young people. They provide a variety of inpatient, day-case and outpatient services for cancer treatments through their day-therapy centre which provides a comprehensive range of chemotherapy delivery, alongside procedures including Intrathecal chemotherapy, Bone-marrow biopsies and Scalp cooling for specific types of chemotherapy treatments. Treatment is also provides through their highly specialist ward where patients who require inpatient treatments, such as complex and lengthy chemotherapy, are cared for. Recently, they have also seen a brand-new state of the art radiotherapy centre, run by neighbouring trust which enables their patients to access radiotherapy and specialist services closer to home.
The new consultant will join a well-established, friendly, and supportive team made up of 8 senior medical staff members including consultants and SAS doctors, within the Medical Oncology department.
WHAT CAREER DEVELOPMENT & OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?
The new consultant's job plan will include a minimum of 1.5 SPAs for CPD, which will allow them to conduct personal study, attend educational meetings, conduct QI/Audits, complete appraisals, participate in mandatory training, as well as support basic teaching sessions. In addition, there are a variety of roles that attract additional SPA, such as being an appraiser, taking on lead roles, chairing meetings, rota leads, and providing educational supervision. The trust offers a range of medical education opportunities to their colleagues, including collaborative educational sessions with primary care colleagues in their PCN. They also actively participate in the annual Clinical Excellence Awards process, and we encourage consultants to apply for and achieve national awards. Any spare CEA funding is allocated collaboratively with the LNC. In previous years, this was transferred to the study leave budget, allowing all consultants to access additional funding and supporting a constant pursuit of excellence.
The executive team is personally committed to supporting our staff and developing leaders. There are a range of packages available to help individuals fulfil their potential as leaders. There is a monthly leadership forum with a variety of speakers, as well as additional training for those who want to advance in this area of their career. The successful candidate will also be given access to the Trust’s Consultant Mentoring Scheme, which aims to support new consultants in their transition from trainee to consultant and their move to a new hospital.
LIFE IN THE REGION
The hospital is placed on the outskirts of a town with a population of over 200,000. It is just five minutes from junction 15 of the M4, 75 miles from London, and 35 miles from Bristol. It is in the midst of beautiful countryside, sitting nearby Marlborough Downs and just south of the Cotswolds.
The town is well known for offering a live music scene at multiple venues. There are also very many cycle parks for evening walks, cinemas, restaurants, and other amenities.
For parents, there are more than seventy public primary schools in the area; therefore parents have more than enough options to choose from, with some of them primary schools having an “Outstanding” Ofsted rating.
