A Hospital in Eastern England are looking for a Consultant or Specialist in Medical Oncology, they are considering either UK or Overseas trained doctors for a fixed term contract type. The trust will support with CESR support for those who are looking to attain CESR and Specialist Registration. This is a high performing and friendly department for overseas doctors new to the NHS, or UK-based doctors looking to further careers in the UK. It has a state-of-the art facilities placing them at the heart of cutting edge health care. What is the NHS Trust like?

This Trust was formed through the merger of two previous NHS Trusts which took place in April 2020. It serves a population of around 270,000 across the region and surrounding areas, with a catchment of 900,000 for vascular services, 24 of which are maternity, 16 are paediatric, ten are critical care and 28 are day-case beds. Its core local authority populations are around 160,000 and 260,000.

The hospital has over 2500 members of staff, making it the largest local employer in the area, and a current turnover of approximately £205m. The hospital enjoys strong community support with over 200 volunteers at the hospital and over £6 million being raised by the it's independent charity over the past 10 years. The support from the charity has enabled the hospital to build a dedicated cancer centre and it has recently funded a new MRI scanner, operational since early 2018.

The main hospital was erected on the site of a General Infirmary. The Infirmary was originally opened in 1803 providing accommodation for 38 patients. Now, the hospital has approximately 400 beds.

What is the Oncology Department like?

The new consultant will be joining a friendly and forawrd-thinking Oncology Department which includes 8 consultants, covering a variety of specialities. There are currently no Junior Doctors in place, although this may change in the future with expansion of training posts. Currently, support to Consultants is provided by Chemo Nurse Practitioners as well as AOS Nurses.

The cancer centre houses the hospital’s outpatient oncology service for cancer patients and new and follow-up patients are seen in one of the several clinics each week. Chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy and other anti-neoplastic agents are administered here daily by one of their specialist chemotherapy nurses, and supported by a phlebotomist in the unit. The chemotherapy suite offers daily sessions, for oncology patients and shared care for haematology patients.

The cancer centre also has its own phlebotomy service, cancer information and support centre as well as a palliative care team. The unit provides a PICC line service and 24hr telephone support line for chemotherapy patients. 

The post holder will be responsible to the Medical Director & the Clinical Director, and is required to prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that he/she is responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient, staff and other users safety.

What Career Development and Further Opportunities are available?

The Hospital's new Education Centre opened in August 2020. This Centre represents a £1.2M investment to provide a training environment for all Hospital NHS staff. Within the Centre, there is a Lecture Theatre, 2 classrooms, a Clinical Skills Lab, a Resuscitation Training Room and a Simulation Suite. The Centre is also equipped with Video-conferencing facilities. There are teaching programmes for students and all grades of staff, meaning training takes place at all levels from undergraduate lectures and clinical teaching, through to Foundation and Core Medical trainee clinical and educational supervision, and higher specialist training. There are also regular weekly Grand Rounds where Consultants and Junior Staff present cases to hospital colleagues and General Practitioners. 

There is real opportunity here to progress through CESR, with a strong desire for newly-qualified consultants to develop their specialty areas of interest and undertake in various cancer trials and research projects where possible.

Life in the region

This region of England has a varied selection of accommodation for rent or purchase, both in rural and urban surroundings, it was voted as one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times in 2019. The hospital itself is situated within walking distance of the town centre.

Education is a prominent feature in the area. The schools provide first-class independent education for some 4,000 girls and boys supported by preparatory schools and other independent schools that cater for all ranges of ability. There is also a wide selection of state schools available. The hospital is situated within walking distance of the town centre

The town and several villages to the north are situated on the River Great Ouse, which is a very attractive feature of the area. The town has two good parks within walking distance of the town centre. One of the park has a children’s play area and formal gardens, another park is within walking distance, offering water sports, nature trails, a visitor centre and marina. The river is an important feature and provides a focus for a very strong rowing community and a Festival held every two years, a large free outdoor event.

The area is well provided for sport, leisure and cultural activities including an International Athletic Stadium, five golf courses, three rowing clubs, Rugby Club, Town Football Club and several swimming pools.

  • Consultant experience in Medical Oncology
  • Or within 6 months of completing CESR or CCT in Medical Oncology

EEA based applicants:
  • Consultant experience in Medical Oncology
  • Recognised European Medical Degree or Specialist Qualification in Clinical Oncology

Non EEA based applicants:
  • MRCP
  • Consultant experience in Medical Oncology
