Job Description

An outstanding mental health Trust in South East England are looking for Consultants in General Adult Psychiatry to work in InPatient Units located in two historical and beautiful small cities. An established NHS Trust providing mental health, learning disability, substance misuse and specialist services across the South East corner of England, with a population of 1.8million. The trust will support with CESR support for IMGs looking to gain GMC Specialist Register.

This is a great opportunity for overseas Consultants in General Adult Psychiatry who want to establish themselves in the NHS, and grow their consultant career. The post is suitable for candidates holding specialisation in the EEA, or for experienced IMGs looking to complete CESR.

WHAT IS THE TRUST LIKE? 

The trust provides mental health, learning disability and specialist services, serving 1.8 million people. The Trust is rated Good overall by the CQC and Outstanding for care, and currently has 3,300 staff working across 33 locations, covering an area of 1,450 square miles. The NHS Trust is commissioned to provide secondary mental health services across their area, both in community and within inpatient settings.

WHAT DOES THE INPATIENT DEPARTMENT LOOK LIKE? 

The wards admit a mixture of Informal and detained patients. Detained patients account for 60% of patients on the wards. Delayed transfer of care patients account for 10% of the wards population. The wards admit adults with various psychiatric disorder and majority suffer with severe enduring mental illness. Patients with personality disorder tend to account for 40% of the wards population and they tend to have the below average length of stay. The post holder is expected to support patient flow team in their effort to facilitate discharges from the ward. The current length of stay (LOS) on our acute ward is 50 days but we are working reducing this to 25 days.

WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN THE REGION?

The area is steeped in history and heritage and is renowned as The Garden of England due to its warm and sunny climate - the best in the UK. Its extensive coastline boasts an enviable array of award-winning beaches and thrilling water sports activities. It is a family friendly place, with excellent state and independent schools and more affordable housing than most other areas in the south east. The area has excellent links to London, just thirty-five minutes from central London on Southeastern’s highspeed rail link, and access to the continent via the Eurostar. The Channel Tunnel and the ferry ports link us to France and beyond. 

The Inpatient units are situated in the areas two largest cities. One, a university city, is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites including its Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral, with its stunning mixture of and Perpendicular Gothic architecture. The city was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages and boasts ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, that encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets lined with boutique shops and timber-framed houses making it one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom. 

The second is a historic town and being the largest in the region is also its capital. It  sits on a picturesque river and is surrounded by beautiful countryside bordering an Area of Outstanding natural Beauty. At the same time it is just 1 hour by train to London and boasts some of the finest schools in the area, along with the best shopping and calendar of events in the county.

Experienced Specialty Doctors and Consultant IMGs who are ambitious to complete CESR and work towards becoming a Specialist Registration will also be supported in this role.
