Job Description

An outstanding NHS Job opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Perinatal Psychiatrist to join a county-wide Perinatal Psychiatry Service. There is a high level of support within the team, as well as an opportunity to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders across services. The department is part of an NHS Trust that is rated "outstanding" overall by the CQC.

Established and launched in April 2019, the department became a county-wide service that is led by 2.0 WTE consultant psychiatrists, along with their operational lead. The team receives, on average, 20-25 referrals a week, with the most common source of referrals being from midwives. Self-referrals to the service are also accepted. Referrals are screened and triaged on a daily basis.

The post holder is expected to: 

  • Provide assessment, treatment and management of moderate – severe perinatal mental health disorders and high risk service users who have a GP during the perinatal period (antenatally and currently up to 12 months postnatally, but will expand to supporting up to 24 months postnatally).
  • Deliver joint obstetric and psychiatric antenatal clinics, and it is expected that this offer will extend to the main hospital.
  • Provide preconception advice to women with complex mental health needs
  • Provide outreach for Luton and Bedfordshire mothers on leave from the Mother and Baby Units and facilitate early discharge from the wards, and provide ongoing support.
