Job Description

UK-based acute medicine consultants, with or without specialist registration in General Internal Medicine or Acute Medicine, are urged to apply for this wonderful role in the city of Bristol. CESR candidates can be supported through their application process with direct input from the supportive and willing department. 

Based in the city of Bristol, this hospital provides a wide range of acute hospital services as well as some health services in South Bristol. The trust provides a full range of acute clinical services to three populations. Acute and emergency services are provided to the local population in South and central Bristol. Specialist regional services from Cornwall to Gloucestershire such as children's services, cardiac and cancer services, as well as specialist services across the whole of the South West, South Wales and beyond. The trust is divided into five clinical divisions: Women’s & Children’s, Medicine (including adults urgent and emergency care), Surgery, Specialised Services and Diagnostic & Therapies.

The trust are looking to appoint a Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine with Specialty Interests. This is an opportunity to join a Trust which is CQC rated ‘Outstanding’ and strongly committed to providing high quality safe care.

    WHAT IS THE NHS TRUST LIKE?

    The Trust provides a wide range of acute hospital services at their main 1000-bed hospital and provides a full range of acute clinical services to three populations of the South West of England. Specialist services such as neurosciences, renal care, urology, plastic surgery and burns treatment are provided and trust is a major specialist centres with links to other local regional hubs in cancer, pathology, dentistry and stroke.

    WHAT IS THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?

    The existing Cellular Pathology service was formed in 2016 following mergers of several services and now the main service is delivered from new, purpose-built accommodation on the main hospital site. The department does however continues to provide an Essential Services Laboratory at the neighbouring hospital. A new Laboratory Information System, Clinisys WinPath Enterprise, was implemented four years previously.

    The service currently runs with a full time WTE of 30 consultants, with currently two vacancies open, and the service is well funded, highly regarded and one of the better UK trusts to be joining in 2021.

    WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN THE REGION?

    Based in a buzzing and culturally rich city, it is now a cultural and artistic hub for the UK offering everything that a UK city can offer. The City Centre is just 15 minutes away from the hospital, and has a great array of shops, theatres, restaurants and has an array of annual festivals and events including the International and local Fiesta and Art and Film Fairs. For those who cycle, the city boasts excellent cycling facilities and was chosen as England’s first cycling city in 2008 and voted the European green capital in 2015.     Flexibility is offered to Consultants and you can choose to specialise in one or two specialist areas. Year one will be focused on developing autonomous reporting and NHS experience, with the focus shifting to CESR support thereafter.

  • Consultant in Care of the Elderly / Geriatric Medicine - Supporting CESR applicants

    A fantastic opportunity for specialist in geriatric or elderly care medicine to settle into their first consultant post and work towards their CESR application, if that is the intention.

    The hospital will consider senior consultants with no UK experience who are not on the UK specialist register for geriatric medicine.

    The Geriatrics department is a small and manageable size with a 28 bedded inpatient ward and various other outlier beds.

    Currently no formal geriatric outpatient services are offered with the exception of a Parkinson's / Movement clinic. The department will be looking to develop these in conjunction with skill set of a successful applicant.

    The Geriatrics department comprises 3 consultants in elderly care medicine supported by 15 specialty registrars, 9 core medical trainees and FY2's and 9 FY1's working full shifts for GIM on call.

    Each consultant will be offered a budget and 30 days of study and professional leave over each 3  year period to pursue their career development activities. Furthermore there is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre which acts as a focus for contract between doctors at all levels an in all disciplines.

    Consultants will be encouraged to actively participate in teaching and training of juniors throughout their tenure.

    Requirements of this position are:

    • MRCP 
    • IELTS or OET
    • Experience working at consultant grade in elderly care

    WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE? 

    The CMHT psychiatrists provide medical input to the well-staffed Assertive Outreach Team (AOT). The Outreach service is expanding and recently merged with the Dual Diagnosis service. This Team has input from an experienced manger and a psychologist. The Dual Diagnosis service offers an intensive service to complex patients with significant substance use and associated risks and a designated lead who assesses, manages or offers a consultation for this patient group. The Dual Diagnosis lead is a Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP).

    The community mental health services have expanded across the Trust with concomitant expansion in staff as we have built up a new service called Open Mental Health, in the last 2 years. This service works closely with primary care, the wider community and the voluntary sector. This service includes psychologists, assistant psychologists, liaison staff, eating disorder leads and support workers. 

    The Consultant will deliver direct interventions including assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental and physical health needs through outpatient clinics at another department and home visits as required, attend the weekly CMHT meeting, and work collaboratively with the inpatient consultant and team based at another Ward to ensure smooth transition for patients admitted and discharged from the ward.

    The city has diverse shopping, restaurants, and regularly hosts international music and sporting fixtures. The county has a GP registered population of approximately 525,000. There’s so much to explore from stunning beaches, green spaces, woodlands, lakes, a wide range of landscapes that includes a beautiful National Park. Whilst tourism and agriculture are important, the county has a number of industrial concerns and a thriving local economy. The area provides access to the M5 motorway and a mainline intercity rail link. Travel connections are convenient with the main line station offering trains to London Paddington in less than 2 hours.

    WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU?

    There is real opportunity to progress through CESR at pace at this trust, with a strong desire for newly-qualified consultants to develop their specialty areas of interest and undertake in various cancer trials and research projects where possible. Research is encouraged here, particularly when this is appropriate to professional development and to the service development of the department. This trust was also rated as an area of Outstanding Practice by CQC (2016), and with the highest GMC score in the South West for training.

    If you are a new consultant you will receive mentoring and support from medical leads as well as access to a large peer group of enthusiastic and high-caliber Consultants.

    EEA: 

    • Specialist certification in psychiatry 
    • Consultant Experience in General Adult Psychiatry

    UK based: 

    • Consultant or Speciality Doctor experience in General Adult Psychiatry
    • Within 6 - 12 months from CESR
