A Large Welsh NHS Trust is looking for full-time, permanent Medical and/or Clinical Oncology Consultants across all specialty interests. The trust is considering either UK or Overseas trained doctors. The trust will support with CESR.

THE NHS TRUST: 

The Trust was established in 1956 and is in Wales. It is a highly respected specialist treatment, teaching, research and development centre for non-surgical tertiary and secondary oncology services. Primarily caring for patients across south-east Wales, VCC also treats patients requiring highly specialised care from all regions of Wales.

THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:  

The Trust is responsible for all NHS SACT services for adults with solid tumours in Southeast Wales. The majority (60%) of day-case services are delivered at the Trust while there is a long-established network of outreach sites in LHB acute and community hospitals and based with 3rd-sector providers. 

Based on its professional and public reputation for delivering excellence in terms of patient and staff experience, Welsh Government has selected this Trust to lead the ‘Transforming Cancer Services’ programme in SE Wales and to build a new hospital.  There will be a £200million pound development which will open in 2025.  It will be nearly twice the size of the current hospital and will be equipped with brand new, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities 

The newly developed Trust will have 10 new linear accelerators, 2 CT and 2 MRI scanners to support precision image-guided and adaptive radiotherapy.  

There will be a dedicated clinical trials treatment unit including a 10-bedded early phase trials unit, and 2 isotope cubicles for molecular radiotherapy treatments.

Maidstone Hospital, part of Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust are looking for a full-time, permanent Clinical Oncology Consultant specialising in Colorectal, Lung, Acute Oncology and Breast. THE NHS TRUST: 

This NHS Trust was formed in April 2000. The Trust consists of two District General Hospitals providing services to approximately 450,000 people living in surrounding areas.  

The Trust consists of several hospitals: its Cancer Centre in particular is renowned and held in high esteem within the South-East of England. 

THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:  

The Oncology Centre receives approximately 8,000 new patients every year and increasing and is within the top 25% of Trusts in the UK for cancer waiting times, meeting the 85% 62-day national standard consistently since August 2019, hitting its 2-week-wait target since September 2019. The Centre has an income of £50m and is home to a custom designed department with dedicated radiotherapy and outpatient facilities as part of the main District General Hospital, which was upgraded in 2012.  

Due to recent funding the Trust has been able to purchase five new state of the art Varian Trubeam Linear Accelerators across its Oncology Centre. Over the 2 sites we have 9 Linear Accelerator Treatment Machines and 3 CT Planning Simulators.  

The research department is made up of more than 60 dedicated staff and recruits around 3000 patients a year to clinical studies across 24 different specialities. The trust benefits from being near academic partners such as Universities and local Medical Schools (KMMS). Additionally, the trust has studies open that are interventional and observational, as well as studies that investigate genetic profiling. Within radiotherapy, the Trust are also undertaking SABR trials. We have many clinicians that support oncology research trials within various specialities.

An established and reputable teaching hospital trust in the midlands are seeking to recruit a Consultant Medical Oncologist, who together with 14 other Consultant Oncologists would provide a comprehensive service for the people of region. The department are looking for a Medical Oncologist with interest in Lung and Skin however there can be some flexibility and this can be discussed further at interview. Applicants for these appointments should have full registration with the UK's General Medical Council and be on the specialist register, or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at time of interview.

WHAT IS THE ONCOLOGY & DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Cancer Business Unit offers high quality clinical care within flexible and sustainable job plan structures. Recently the Trust has seen the opening of a graduate entry Medical School which has greatly enhanced the teaching and research opportunities for medical staff.

The Chemotherapy facility includes a state of the art Day Unit with 24 outpatient chemotherapy chairs, a 5 chair assessment bay for unwell patients, two 2 bedded siderooms, and 4 counselling/clinic rooms. Chemotherapy is prepared in a satellite pharmacy within the Unit. Treatment is provided by experienced chemotherapy nurses who are well versed in cannulation and administering chemotherapy. There are plans to move the unwell assessment area to the inpatient ward very shortly. They have 70 dedicated oncology beds across the trust and provision of side rooms for neutropenic patients and special requirements. The Oncology service is well supported by a well-established Haematology Service, Palliative Medicine Service including inpatient unit, Clinical Psychologists, interpreters and bereavement support staff.

Radiotherapy, Brachytherapy and Radiotherapy Physics are housed together in a purpose-built centre, with the following equipment:

• 4 Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators
• Aria Oncology management system and Eclipse treatment planning.
• HDR Brachytherapy Unit
• Xstrahl Superficial Xray therapy – 80kV & 120kV
• Toshiba wide-bore CT-simulator, with Prosoma Virtual simulation

Department overview: 

The department is well staffed and the new appointee will join a team of 20 oncologists. The post is predominantly based in the trusts dedicated cancer centre. The cancer care services have benefited from recent investment of £35million, and you will have the opportunity to work within a state of the art facilities. 

The post would focus on colorectal or upper GI cancer and cancer of the unknown primary (CUP) with possible work in other disease sites if needed.

The department boasts an expanded chemotherapy unit designed to meet the increasing demand for systemic treatment with established nurse-led and pharmacy-led chemotherapy clinics.

The trust also houses state of the art radiotherapy facilities.
