We are looking for an experienced radiation oncologist with particular experience and expertise in breast cancer. Candidates can be starting their CESR journey in Clinical (Radiation) Oncology, or already on the specialist register for oncology. The centre is fantastic and one of the finest and friendliest oncology centres in the UK. It is a beautiful centre with an amazing team and track record for helping doctors through the CESR route to specialist registration. This role requires an oncologist with real experience in the treatment and management of breast cancer with previous experience at consultant level, either inside or outside the UK.
Job requirements:
- FRCR or equivalent
- IELTS or OET (no exemptions can be granted)
- Extensive experience as a consultant oncologist
- Extensive experience in breast cancer and radiotherapy treatments
- GMC registration either applied for or granted
Length of contract:

INTRODUCTION TO THE POST
This is a 10 PA permanent (substantive) post to be based in medium sized district general hospital in the midlands of England. Working in a small, friendly team this is a good job for consultants looking for their first post in the UK in a well located, beautiful part of the UK.
WHAT IS THE HOSPITAL LIKE?
The hospital has approximately 400 bed beds, serving a population of approximately 270,000 across the county and surrounding areas (with a 900,000 catchment for vascular services) of which 24 are maternity, 16 are paediatric, ten are critical care and 28 are day-case beds. The hospital has over 2500 members of staff (making it the largest local employer in the area) and a current turnover of approximately £205m. The hospital enjoys strong community support with over 200 volunteers at the hospital and over £6 million being raised by it's independent Charity over the past 10 years. The support from the charity has enabled the hospital, for example, to build a dedicated cancer centre and has also recently funded a new MRI scanner, operational since early 2018.
WHAT IS THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The department of cellular pathology is split across two sites and currently has seven full time consultants in post. The department would like to bring this up to 9 in total as the department expands its service. There is a team of biomedical scientists and laboratory assistants that support the service and each consultants is provided with secretarial support, office, an ergonomic microscope, and a designated computer with internet access.
The workload for 2019-20 for this particular site was:
- Histopathology - 18,924 cases
- Diagnostic cytology -1047 cases
- Andrology - 654 cases
- The surgical pathology work from the hospital (biopsies and resections) reflects the clinical speciality mix of the hospital whilst the case mix is typical of a district general hospital.
- The department provides a histopathology service for the NHS bowel cancer screening, breast screening and cervical screening service.
- A good repertoire of antibodies is available for immunohistochemistry at both sites, with less commonly used antibodies referred out to specialist centres for staining.
- There is a histology laboratory and “cut up” room. The laboratory contains standard equipment, which includes three tissue processors (a VIP and two Leica processors), two Embedding Centres (a Sakura and a Leica) and two Leica integrated auto-stainers and cover-slippers. The Roche Ventana Ultra staining platform is used for immunocytochemical stains
- The department has a multi-headed microscope which enables the Consultants to meet and discuss cases
- The Cytology laboratory includes a dedicated preparation room for the preparation of non-gynaecological specimens and contains one Cytospin, one centrifuge.
- The pathology laboratory is fully computerised with the CliniSys WinPath Enterprise system. The laboratory based system links directly with hospital and ward based systems, with both ICE requesting and reporting.
- The Hospital has many clinical links with the tertiary centre of Addenbrooke’s and Papworth Hospitals. It is part of the Anglia Cancer Network and the department participates in specialist MDTs within the Network. The perinatal and paediatric autopsy service is provided by Consultant Paediatric Pathologists at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
- The Mortuary is also the Public Mortuary for the county. Coroner’s post-mortems are not part of the NHS contract and are performed at the behest of the Coroner.
- The Cellular Pathology Department has full accreditation against ISO15189.
- The Laboratory participates in NEQAS for:
- General Histopathology (staining)
- Immunocytochemistry
- Andrology (sperm motility and morphology)
WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN THE REGION?
The local town is a thriving market town, which provides easy access to London (55 miles), the East Midlands, the North of England and beyond through its rail links and M1 / A1 / A14 accessibility. First Capital Connect runs trains directly to London Luton and London Gatwick airport. Trains run to London St. Pancras, the international terminal for Eurostar.
The Hospital currently provides services for a population of around 270,000, of which 119,600 live in the main county town of. The area is primarily agricultural, with numerous pleasant villages within easy commuting distance of the hospital. In recent years most of the expansion in population has been in the M1 / A1 corridor and significant further growth is planned in the surrounding areas. It is anticipated that by 2021 there will be a further 50-55,000 people living in the town area.
There is a varied selection of accommodation for rent or purchase, both in rural and urban surroundings. Education is a prominent feature in the Town. The local schools provide first-class independent education for some 4,000 girls and boys supported by preparatory schools and other independent schools that cater for all ranges of ability. There is also a wide selection of state schools available. The Local University has a campus in the town; and the College also offers a comprehensive range of courses in Applied Sciences, Health, Education, Business and The Arts, leading to qualifications such as HNDs, CertEd., PGCE and foundation degrees. Cranfield University is located in the local area. The hospital is situated within walking distance of the town centre.
Several local villages to the north are situated on the large river which is a very attractive feature of the area. There are two good parks within walking distance of the town centre. Russell Park, with its children’s play area and formal gardens, takes its name from the Dukes. The main Park, laid out by the Victorians, has a circular carriage ride, pavilions, lodges and bandstand. The Country Park is within walking distance, offering water sports, nature trails, a visitor centre and marina. The river is an important feature and provides a focus for a very strong rowing community and River Festival held every two years, a large free outdoor event.
The area is well provided for sport, leisure and cultural activities including an International Athletic Stadium, five golf courses, three rowing clubs, a Rugby Club, a Town Football Club and several swimming pools. The world-famous local Orchestra has a residency nearby where it performs eight concerts each year, as well as involvement in educational activity in schools and the local community. John Bunyan was born in 1628 in Elstow, just south of the town.

WHAT IS THE HOSPITAL & TRUST LIKE?
The trust comprises two main acute hospitals with this role based at the larger, and better performing centre with affiliations to the local University. This post will not involve cross-site cover. The hospitals management and culture are renowned for being friendly, welcoming and supportive of ambition and career development.
WHAT IS THE HISTOPATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
You will be joining a supportive Histopathology team of six Consultants and two Associate Specialists. To support the service delivery the work of the department is divided on a daily rolling rota. The department is not currently subspecialised, however this may change, and the department are open to discuss circumstances where candidates may be interested in reporting two or three areas. The trust has an ambitious programme of service modernisation and a reputation for providing high quality services. The department has recently consolidated its services onto the main site and now undertakes around 34,000 requests per annum of general histopathology from both sites.
The department are planning to undertake an extensive laboratory refurbishment over the next few years and they are also taking part in the North England Pathology Imaging Collaborative, one of the largest digital imaging projects in the world. Currently they do not routinely report digitally though it is something being worked on for the future. The laboratory is also in the process of implementing a new laboratory information system and a new immunohistochemistry system and end-to-end specimen tracking system.

These are either permanent (substantive) roles or locum consultant posts dependent on specialist registration status, whilst those requiring consultant sign off to complete their CESR application process will be supported.
WHAT IS THE NHS TRUST LIKE?
The Trust provides a wide range of acute hospital services at their main 1000-bed hospital and provides a full range of acute clinical services to three populations of the South West of England. Specialist services such as neurosciences, renal care, urology, plastic surgery and burns treatment are provided and trust is a major specialist centres with links to other local regional hubs in cancer, pathology, dentistry and stroke.
WHAT IS THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The existing Cellular Pathology service was formed in 2016 following mergers of several services and now the main service is delivered from new, purpose-built accommodation on the main hospital site. The department does however continues to provide an Essential Services Laboratory at the neighbouring hospital. A new Laboratory Information System, Clinisys WinPath Enterprise, was implemented four years previously.
The service currently runs with a full time WTE of 30 consultants, with currently two vacancies open, and the service is well funded, highly regarded and one of the better UK trusts to be joining in 2021.

The Geriatrics department is a small and manageable size with a 28 bedded inpatient ward and various other outlier beds.
Currently no formal geriatric outpatient services are offered with the exception of a Parkinson's / Movement clinic. The department will be looking to develop these in conjunction with skill set of a successful applicant.
The Geriatrics department comprises 3 consultants in elderly care medicine supported by 15 specialty registrars, 9 core medical trainees and FY2's and 9 FY1's working full shifts for GIM on call.
Each consultant will be offered a budget and 30 days of study and professional leave over each 3 year period to pursue their career development activities. Furthermore there is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre which acts as a focus for contract between doctors at all levels an in all disciplines.
Consultants will be encouraged to actively participate in teaching and training of juniors throughout their tenure.

A Foundation Trust in the South West of England are looking to appoint an Associate Specialist in Geriatric Medicine to provide a Proactive care of Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) to older surgical patients. This is a new appointment with the exciting opportunity for further service development and integrated working with the surgical teams.
With an already established POPS team comprising a Consultant Geriatrician and a POPS Advance Nurse Practitioner (band 8a) the POPS team are an essential part of the team on the surgical unit. Review frail, older adults admitted as an emergency under the care of the colorectal and upper gastrointestinal teams there is already the infrastructure in place to fulfill the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit criteria demonstrating MDT working with geriatrician support
Successful candidates will have the choice to work full time or completely flexible hours to fit in with any outside commitments and this is a great opportunity to help develop the POPS service to deliver the highest quality care.

Supportive role for geriatricians or elderly care physicians looking to attain CESR and work as NHS Consultants.
Working for a well established Teaching Hospital Trust, the successful applicant will join a team of 26 consultants across both hospitals in the trust. Geriatricians with interests in all subspecialties will be considered including frailty, orthogeriatrics, acute geriatrics, rehab and stroke medicine however some general medicine involvement is essential. Successful consultants must in time be included on the GIM on call rota.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Department provides a service to approximately 240,000 people in a predominantly rural area covering 1,600 sq. miles. The service consists of Acute Medical Unit with 23 beds, short stay ward with 6 beds, triage unit with 5 trolleys, ambulatory Emergency Care Unit with 2 trolleys and 2 chairs, procedure unit with 3 trolleys and 4 chairs. Patients are referred by directly by General Practitioner and the Emergency Department. The Acute Medical Service sees just over 1000 patients per month.
The Department has 2 partner services - the Cardiac Services, which has a modern 6 bedded unit and has the facility to remotely monitor 6 beds on the Acute Medical Admissions Unit, 4 on the Acute Medicine ward and a further 2 in the Emergency Department, and the Emergency Department, which is one of the best staffed units in the UK and has got a full complement of (non-locum!) consultants and middle grades. The pre-hospital fellow program attracts candidates from all over the UK.
The post holder will be required to regularly participate in the medical audit and continuing medical education and professional development as part of the organisational clinical governance requirement. The post holder responsibilities include ward rounds on the AMU (8am to 4pm): Review of up to 30 patients in the Acute Medical Unit including ongoing management of patients in the triage area and early review of emergency presentations.

The department currently have three full-time urological surgeons, a Locum Consultant along with 5 middle grade registrar level training including 1 SpR from the Mersey Deanery training programme. There are two SHO level staff and one FY1 and FY2. The Department has recently undergone a refurbishment, to provide day-case urology and therapeutic services to include TRUS-Guided prostate biopsy lists, an endoscopy suite, dedicated lithotripsy sessions and specialist out-patient clinics. The department has inpatient beds based on the 3rd floor within the Surgical Department. Paediatric beds are also available on the main hospital site.
The department uses one of the two dedicated purpose built modern integrated laparoscopic surgery theatres for its heavy laparoscopic workload. Currently, major laparoscopic Nephrectomies and prostatectomies are performed in this OR. A 12 bedded Intensive Care/High Dependency Unit is located on the first floor of the hospital. There are excellent pathology facilities, including a Public Health Laboratory. The Radiology Department offers a full range of facilities, including CT, MRI and fully functional intervention radiology service.
The post holder will provide elective and emergency inpatient services, along with other members of the department. The post holder will also participate actively in the Department’s Clinical Audit Programme and Continuing Professional Development, which is fully supported by the Health Board.

The service has a range of highly skilled Clinical Psychologists, CAMHS Nurses, Child Therapists (trained in CBT, DBT, EMDR, IPT etc), Systemic and Family Psychotherapists and CAMHS Practitioners (who comprise professionals from a range of other eligible disciplines such as social work and occupational therapy). The CAMHS has integrated Early Intervention and Prevention and Child Health Psychology functions as well as Family Wellbeing Practitioners who support GP Clusters in the area.
The post holder will be provide assessment, formulation and management of significant developmental, behavioural and mental health disorders occurring in children and adolescents 0-18 years. The post holder will participate in relevant strategic and operational meetings and contribute to team management processes of the Community CAMHS teams, including clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.

The Emergency Medicine Department was purposely built in 2014 and offers state- of-the-art facilities. There are approximately 58,000 attendances a year, of which 14,000 are under 18. The ED is co-located with the GP Out of Hours service and enjoys an excellent relationship with the service. Currently there are 4 substantive EM Consultants and 2 NHS locum Consultant appointments. There are no long-term agency locum Consultant staff.
The department provides 24-hour cover by a senior shop floor decision maker and the Tier 2 level is provided by a mixture of Specialty doctors and EPIC Clinical Fellows. Currently there are 5 EPIC Clinical Fellows and 13 Specialty Doctors, some of whom work less than full time for the ED. The junior tier currently has 12 doctors comprising a mixture of GPST trainees, Foundation doctors, and Clinical Fellows. Additionally, there are 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and these contribute to the junior Tier 1. The minors service is provided by 7 ENP’s, and 2 dedicated ED Extended Scope Physiotherapists.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to quality improvement work in the ED, and support is available to ensure projects are sustainable and successful. The post holder will need to be familiar with modern models of Emergency Care in order to support the department in its goals of improving performance and patient safety.
