WHAT IS THE TRUST LIKE?
The Trust in the East of England with two main acute hospitals and has traditionally scored highly on their CQC reports and cancer waiting targets. Now with the delays to cancer care caused by covid-19 there is a real urgency to recruit and help recitfy some of the cancer targets that are being missed.
WHAT IS THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
This role will be based at the larger of the two sites, and if successful you would be joining a team of eight oncology consultants in their specialist cancer unit on site. The consultants are currently supported by a specialty doctor team and are a team of nine consultants total.
The post holder will work according to an agreed job plan of 10 PA (40-hours per week) with a minimum of 8.5 PAs dedicated to Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 SPAs (supporting professional activities). There will also be some on call commitment to this role which can be discussed during interview. The role will embrace all aspects of Oncology including solid tumour chemotherapy and technically advanced radiotherapy (if a clinical oncologist).
The primary requirement is for Upper & Lower GI cancers and have an open interest to other tumour sites

This role is primarily looking for clinical consultants on the specialist register for oncology however they can consider applicants from medical oncologists with similar interests, or doctors not yet on the specialist register.
For those not on the specialist register, support can be provided towards their CESR application
Consultants on the specialist register will be given autonomy and will freedom to develop their special interests, with access to additional leadership, research and teaching duties available for those that want it.
Regardless of specialism, all consultants will be fully integrated members of the oncology team and receive full induction process and will be involved in clinical audit and governance.
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR THIS ROLE?

- MRCP or equivalent if Medical Oncologist
- FRCR or equivalent if Clinical Oncologist
- Extensive experience in oncology
- Previous consultant experience

WHAT IS THE TRUST & HOSPITAL LIKE?
The trust provides both acute hospital and community health care and has nearly 10,000 staff and an annual budget in 2019/20 of over £715 million. The trust has two large general hospitals in the East of England, typically well performing hospitals scoring highly in their CQC reports.
WHAT IS THE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
Their aim is to incorporate the latest technologies and innovations to ensure the service is prepared for current and future challenges of the modern NHS, and the Trust is working towards a collaboration with a large teaching hospital and tertiary centre in China. This will bring exciting opportunities to the Histopathology department with regards research and teaching. There will be programmes of fellowship including histopathology, collaborated research projects are already started and in progress.
- The post holder appointed will take a proportionate share in the provision of the service in surgical pathology, and cytopathology.
- Surgical cut-up is performed by Consultant Pathologists, Specialty Registrars and Biomedical Scientists.
- Two biomedical scientists have completed the Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological dissection (cut-up) and one is currently in training.
- Small biopsies are handled by the technical staff.
- The Consultant Pathologists report all FNA and non-cervical cytology specimens.
- There is no provision of FNA for one stop clinics and histopathologists are not involved in taking FNA samples.
- There is currently no true sub-specialisation in the reporting of surgical histology or diagnostic cytology, although there is a lead pathologist for each of the cancer sites who acts as a contact point within the Department and participates in multidisciplinary meetings.
- There is no on-call commitment.
- The post holder may choose to undertaken coronial post mortem examinations through direct agreement with the local coroners services. This is via agreement directly with the coroner, coverage of post mortem activity if offset by time shifting of contracted NHS time to take account of the time spent undertaking the coronial post mortems.

- Specialist Registration in Histopathology or
- FRCPath and extensive consultant experience or
- GMC registration with reporting experience in a similar healthcare system

The consultants are currently supported by two full time specialty doctors and an Associate Specialist, working both in outpatients, in supporting the day unit and in the assessment of patients via the acute oncology service. It is envisaged that the post holder will work according to an agreed job plan of 10 PA (40-hours per week) with a minimum of 8.5 PAs dedicated to Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 SPAs (supporting professional activities). There will also be some on call commitment to this role which can be discussed during interview. The role will embrace all aspects of Oncology including solid tumour chemotherapy and technically advanced radiotherapy (if a clinical oncologist).
The proposed tumour sites are Urology and Upper GI cancer including hepatobiliary cancer as the principle tumour sites, and provide radiotherapy support for lymphomas. However there is scope to negotiate the preferred site-specialisation according to the interests of the applicants. There is also scope for interested candidates to lead and develop Gynaecology brachytherapy services.

Applicants for both pure breast radiology or breast and general radiology (or another subspecialty) are encouraged to apply.
Ideally, the applicant will be trained in screening, individuals with symptomatic breast training only will be considered. If the applicant wishes to train in screening this would also be supported by the Trust.
General Radiology duties will be based in the main department at one site, while sessions in breast imaging are located in a seperate site within the larger complex.
Performance:
42,225 women were invited for screening in 2017/18 with an uptake of 78.9% and the very successful High Risk MR breast screening service was implemented in 2014.
Symptomatic breast imaging services are provided by the breast imaging team independently and the symptomatic service receives approximately 4500 referrals per year. All these referrals are seen in a one stop clinic with surgical and imaging assessment in the same visit.
Radiology Team:
You will be part of a team that includes the following:
- Four committed and enthusiastic breast radiologists based in the trust, forming an essential part of the localities Breast Screening Service.
- Two advanced radiographic practitioners will also support performing stereotactic biopsy and wire placement
- Four film reading radiographers providing screen reading.
- The clinics are well supported by specialist breast care nurses.
Equipment & Facilities:
Equipment is as the following:
- They have a fully digital service having 1 brand new GE Pristina mammography unit with DBT, CESM and 2D biopsy.
- There is a further Philips L30 with Diagnostic Scan mammography unit.
- There are 2 breast ultrasound rooms with voice recognition reporting equipped with new Canon Aplio machines.
- Vacuum assisted Encore biopsy is available in addition to standard 14G.
- MRI services are housed in a new diagnostic imaging centre adjacent to Gainsborough Wing.
- New breast coils and software are installed.
- Multi-disciplinary breast care meetings are held in the unit’s dedicated MDT room.
- The unit enjoys excellent working relationships with our colleagues in breast surgery, oncology and nursing care.
Requirements for this position are the following:
- FRCR or equivalent
- Unfortunately no PLAB candidates will be considered unless exceptional circumstances
- IETLS or OET and eligibility for GMC registration
- Extension experience trained in breast screening, whilst individuals with symptomatic breast training only will be considered

The post holder will work in a Level 2a service so there are no designated beds. Patients requiring admission with haematological conditions will be admitted under the medical take team - and the consultant haematologist and / or senior clinical fellow will support the responsible clinicians on a daily basis through clinical advice and input.
The haematology team provides support to the Day Treatment Unit and patients attending for blood transfusion, platelets and other procedures.
There is also a major collaboration with a prestigious teaching hospital and cancer centre nearby and MDTs are also held in conjunction via video calling.

Fantastic opportunity for consultant looking to attain CESR in Geriatric Medicine with a supportive NHS department.
The trust provides healthcare services for a population of around 280,000 and is a replacement post for a retiring doctor.
This is a 10 PA post and the successful applicant will take responsibility for elderly patients on the main ward blocks, will independently lead two outpatient clinics per week for general geriatric medicine with on-call commitments for unselected admissions (1 in 14).
In addition there will be three weekly ward rounds, daily consultant input and regular MDTs.
You will also be fully expected to take an active involvement with directorate teaching, management and clinical governance activities.
Multidisciplinary team working and colleague support is very strong here and this hospital is a fantastic place for aspiring NHS consultants to work towards their CESR in Geriatric Medicine.

Radiology consultants looking to attain Specialist Registration in the NHS via CESR are invited to apply The successful applicant will be fully competent to cover conventional radiology, ultrasound, CT, MRI and on-call. Breast Radiology experience or interest would be desirable.
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging is based at a 500 bed University Hospital providing most major surgical and medical specialties to the towns across the East of England. The Trust achieved NHS Foundation Trust status as of 1st August 2006 and was rated “Good,” following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection which took place in July 2018. This places them in the top 30% of acute trusts in the country.
The department is equipped to a high standard and is fully digital with GE PACS in use since 2005, supported by a modern RIS (CRIS) which has been recently upgraded with voice recognition software. We are in the process of developing home reporting and network sharing capacity.
The main department has four general rooms, a dental room and two rooms with digital fluoroscopy, one of which is a C-Arm. Waiting facilities for patients have been recently upgraded and include a dedicated bed bay for the safe management of ward patients.
The ultrasound department has three new Philips IU22 and four Toshiba machines. Most recent additions include a Toshiba Aplio for nuchal scans in obstetrics and a Philips CX50 portable unit for community ultrasound.
The cross sectional imaging suite has 2 GE Lightspeed 16 slice CT scanners housed in separate suites for inpatient and outpatient work and a Siemens Avanto 1.5T MRI. Acquisition of a 128 slice CT scanner for cardiac imaging is under consideration.
Breast screening and symptomatic mammography services are provided and a major refurbishment of the breast imaging suite has recently been completed with installation of full field digital mammography equipment for both screening and symptomatic work.

The appointee will be part of a team of ten consultants and will be involved in all aspects of departmental work. This will include involvement in multi-disciplinary team meetings for cancer body sites, including Upper GI, Colorectal, Breast, Lung, Haematology, Urology, Gynaecology, Head and Neck, and Thyroid.
The Department has a commitment to teaching undergraduates from the local University and Medical School and an interest in teaching would be an advantage. In addition Specialist Registrars from the Radiology Academy based at a neighbouring University Hospital rotate through the department giving further opportunities for teaching.
Senior radiologists looking to develop their career in the NHS and work towards attaining Specialist Registration via CESR and ultimately a permanent post will be fully supported.
