We are recruiting for an experienced and motivated Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine to join a friendly and enthusiastic team in the Midlands. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who are interested in securing CESR within 1 - 2 years.
What is the Trust like?
The Trust is one of the largest acute and community providers in the West Midlands having more than 850 beds on one of their 3 sites in the area. The trust has had a new £38 million Emergency Department was opened at the Hospital. Boasting 30 treatment rooms for minor injuries, 18 for major injuries and a resuscitation area for adults, as well as a dedicated paediatric area for children, one of the largest in the region.
The trust has also been rated outstanding in caring in February 2002 by the CQC following an inspection. Additionally in 2018, a new 2.4 million Stroke Unit opened at one of their sites, now all suspected stroke cases from the near by cities are treated in this specialist unit.
What is the Department Like?
Our Stroke service provides Hyper-acute and Acute Care for the combined populations of all the peripheral areas with the hospital which has a combined population of around 600000 people. The department provides a 24/7 service for stroke thrombolysis and thrombectomy pathway consisting of 2 ring-fenced HASU beds for Stroke admissions out of 12 designated HASU beds with a dedicated consultant as a part of rota. The department also consist 24/7 access to CT clinics, 3 CT scanners along with 3 MRI scanners (4th MRI is currently being deployed). In Addition to that, the department have rapid access to outpatient CTAs and have a very efficient pathway with the Vascular service for rapid carotid endartectomy intervention if that is required.

It is compact, with no boundary more than four miles from the centre and is approximately a 30-minute drive to Birmingham (15 miles), 1 hour 20 minutes to Manchester (60 miles). The city is an urban, multi-ethnic city with a population of around 250,000. The wider hospital catchment area has a population of in excess of 350,000. With more than 600 shops, bars, café and restaurants, the city is not only a great place to work but also somewhere to relax and enjoy. The city centre is just a 10-minute bus ride from the Hospital.
The nearby countryside of Staffordshire and Shropshire is delightful. To the north is Cannock Chase and to the west the Shropshire borders with attractions of Bridgnorth, the Clee Hills, the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, and the Severn Valley. South of Wolverhampton, the City of Worcester is easily accessible, and to the west north-Wales can be reached in just over an hour. The area has a large network of canals, the majority renovated, offering adjacent housing and popular for narrow boat holidays.

WHAT IS THE NHS TRUST LIKE?
The Trust employs 6,500 staff and has 1250 inpatient beds across its two sites, a large University Hospital in the city and the General Hospital in a nearby large town. University Hospital is one of the UK’s leading specialist teaching hospitals, providing world-class healthcare to a population of over 1,000,000. A designated Major Trauma Centre in the West Midlands, and offer state state-of-the-art facilities offering major advances in patient care, clinical teaching and innovation.
WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Stroke Department\'s Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) is 6 bedded, and has a twice daily consultant-led ward round with the junior doctors and stroke nurse. The post holder will join another 6 stroke physicians to provide cover to the on a rotational basis. A robust thrombolysis pathway has been in operation since 2008 allowing paramedics to bring FAST positive patients from the county to UHCW ED with a pre-alert. All FAST pre-alert calls go directly to the stroke nurse specialist for initial triage and advice. The HASU has access to 7 day physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vascular ultrasound, CT scanning.
Another unit in the department is the Acute/Rehabilitation Stroke Unit which has 30 beds. The multidisciplinary stroke team consists of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, dietetics and neuropsychology. Stroke Association family support workers and the Intermediate Discharge Team are also available on the unit. An early Supported Discharge Service is now well established and members of the team attend comprehensive daily morning board rounds. Currently around 60% of our stroke patients are seen by the ESD service.
There is a daily dedicated TIA clinic held adjacent to the stroke Unit with rapid-access protocols in place from primary care and ED. Clinics are run as a one-stop shop with direct access to carotid Dopplers and Trans cranial Ultrasound and MRI brain scans . The service receives approx. 1000 referrals per annum. The post holder will take part in the daytime acute stroke on-call cover and participate in running the day to day activities, such as ward rounds and MDTs on the stroke ward along with running acute TIA clinics and stroke follow up clinics.

There is a good selection of state and private schools in across the region. The area has excellent transport links on the London-Birmingham intercity rail line, with other rail lines to Manchester, Oxford, and Bournemouth. Motorways run from the city centre to every major city in the Midlands and beyond. There is a major international airport at Birmingham and East Midlands airport is 40 minutes’ drive north.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the respiratory team, one of the largest respiratory departments in the country with a breadth of subspecialty interests; ranging from Cystic Fibrosis, ILD including LAM, through asthma, COPD, lung cancer to infections including TB and a regional fungal service.
This post will help the department develop both the COPD and asthma services, working with colleagues to deliver comprehensive integrated care. As a member of a large and dynamic department there are significant opportunities for professional development, including research. Both the asthma and COPD services benefit from academic leads with internationally recognised research profiles.
The successful applicant will have weekly clinics focusing on both COPD and asthma, and will join both the alternate week Asthma MDT and the regional lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) MDT, held 6 times a year. There will also be the opportunity for a monthly bronchoscopy list.
