An excellent opportunity for an experienced Specialty Doctor in Oncology to join the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, a large acute, advanced, high performing and specialised hospital trust that provides a range of local acute services to the residents of the county and more specialised services to a larger population in Herefordshire and beyond. The Trust operates hospital-based services from three different sites. The post is suitable for overseas specialty doctors, including candidates who are pursuing CESR.

WHAT IS THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The new Oncology Centre opened in 2014 at the one of their sites. It serves the county’s population of 600,000. The oncology centre is now fully functional with state of the art equipment and facilities in radiotherapy. The Department of Oncology is dynamic and forward looking with a friendly, supportive and approachable ethos. It has rapidly expanded and provides specialist cancer care across the three hospital sites that make up this large Acute Trust.
Oncology inpatients are primarily based on the 15 bedded Laurel 2 Oncology Ward, which is located in the Trust's main hospital building. There are no dedicated oncology inpatient beds at AH or KTC. A 5-chaired AOS assessment bay has recently been developed within the oncology ward; it is open 9am-9pm every day including weekends. In addition to the consultant oncologists, 4 specialty doctors in oncology provide countywide support to outpatient clinics, chemotherapy clinics and AOS. There is a dedicated team of Acute Oncology CNSs who provide support at both sites for oncology emergencies and inpatients.
The post holder will work as part of a team with Oncologists to help with support for the Chemotherapy and radiotherapy service and outpatients clinics across the hospital sites and working with the oncology ward, assist in the provision of an Acute Oncology service. There will also be the opportunity to contribute to teaching, clinical research and audit. There is an on-call rota, of which the applicant can be part of.

An excellent opportunity for highly specialised Consultants in Histopathology / Cellular Pathology & Cytopathology to ply their trade in their areas of specialty interest. Whilst this post is advertised for Gastronintestinal pathology specialists (UGI and LGI), there are many other sub-specialty areas of interest
What is the Pathology Group like?
The group comprises four pathology laboratories providing pathology services for acute hospitals and also local GPs. Some of their laboratories also offer specialist services to the wider NHS and work on research studies and trials. As part of a major initiative in the NHS, Pathology in England is being reorganised into much larger local network models and this sees the formation of 29 pathology units across the country.
This makes this center an incredibly attractive place to work, as it is right at the forefront of NHS innovation and Digitalisation in Pathology, offer the latest tests & services and applying cutting edge clinical science to modern patient care. The centre sees roughly 120,000 cases across a team of 36 consultants (plus some outsourcing) with a capacity to recruit to 40 full-time consultants
What is the Pathology Department Like?
Formed as a result of the Lord Carter review of Pathology services across England which identified the need for significant reductions in over testing, improved resilience and reduced costs. Serving 1.4 million people and performing 60 million tests each year, the group needed to completely redesign its IT systems to operate effectively and efficiently, allowing them to offer integrated service, adopt new technologies to improve flexibility, and deliver better laboratory results faster.
Highly praised, and considered one of the best centres to work in the UK as a pathologist. The evidence is there to be seen, as latest figures show the BCPS scored 92 per cent compliance on a dashboard provided by NHS Improvement, ranking it one of the best performing services in the country.

Life in the West Midlands
Based is a modern industrial city situated on the midlands. It is compact, with no boundary more than four miles from the centre and is approximately a 30-minute drive to Birmingham (15 miles), 1 hour 20 minutes to Manchester (60 miles). The city is an urban, multi-ethnic city with a population of around 250,000. The wider hospital catchment area has a population of in excess of 350,000. With more than 600 shops, bars, café and restaurants, the city is not only a great place to work but also somewhere to relax and enjoy. The city centre is just a 10-minute bus ride from the Hospital.
The nearby countryside of Staffordshire and Shropshire is delightful. To the north is Cannock Chase and to the west the Shropshire borders with attractions of Bridgnorth, the Clee Hills, the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, and the Severn Valley. South of Wolverhampton, the City of Worcester is easily accessible, and to the west north-Wales can be reached in just over an hour. The area has a large network of canals, the majority renovated, offering adjacent housing and popular for narrow boat holidays.
Am I eligible for this role?

The hospital has a busy emergency department (level 1 Trauma Centre) and provides services to 2.5 million residents, and specialist services to a further 3-4million across the region and nationally.
You will join an existing team of 30 NHS and academic consultants providing general and specialist Respiratory services to the people of the city and region.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the respiratory team, one of the largest respiratory departments in the country with a breadth of subspecialty interests; ranging from Cystic Fibrosis, ILD including LAM, through asthma, COPD, lung cancer to infections including TB and a regional fungal service.
This post will help the department develop both the COPD and asthma services, working with colleagues to deliver comprehensive integrated care. As a member of a large and dynamic department there are significant opportunities for professional development, including research. Both the asthma and COPD services benefit from academic leads with internationally recognised research profiles.
The successful applicant will have weekly clinics focusing on both COPD and asthma, and will join both the alternate week Asthma MDT and the regional lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) MDT, held 6 times a year. There will also be the opportunity for a monthly bronchoscopy list.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE:
- EEA candidates - Diploma of specialisation
- Non-EEA candidates - MRCP and consultant level experience in Respiratory Medicine
- UK candidates - Consultant experience in Respiratory Medicine
This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious consultant in respiratory medicine to work in a state of the art hospital, set within a wonderful part of the country.
The existing consultants have a generalist commitment and have developed special interests in line with the Trust’s MDT commitments, and it is anticipated that the new appointee, whilst maintaining generalist commitments, will equally bring or develop their own special interests. It is expected their interests can be flexibly integrated with those of the existing consultants.
You will be joining a team with the following staff numbers:
- 5 substantive consultant Cellular Pathologists
- 4 consultants in haematology
- 2 consultants in microbiology
The department has the following:
- fully computerised with a laboratory-wide system (ACT APEX)
- each consultant has use of a personal computer linked to the pathology and hospital networks.
- uses the SNOMED classification system.
- macro photography facilities in cut-up
- a well-stocked library of contemporary bench books and journals is present in the department. the department also subscribes to the American Journal of Surgical Pathology
- FRCPath in Histopathology
- Extensive experience in Histology and/or Cytology
- Eligibility for GMC registration
