WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Gastroenterology is a team of forward-thinking and well-motivated consultants with special interests in respiratory medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology, and care of the elderly. The gastroenterology department consists of 2 consultants. Whilst this post is not an approved training post it is recognised by the Royal College of Physicians of London for the MRCP (UK) examinations. There is a firm commitment to continuing professional development and the opportunity to participate in specialist clinics and procedure lists. On site the department has an Academy which provides up-to-date IT facilities and library services.
The post requires independent upper and lower endoscopy, outpatient clinics, and an inpatient responsibility for the gastroenterology ward on a 1:3 rotational basis. The post includes a commitment to the emergency endoscopy rota plus GIM on call rota.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU?

This post will have 10 programmed activities (PA). There will be an option to negotiate an increase to up to a maximum 12 PAs subsequent to appointment, to support additional activities such as research, educational supervision, or sub-specialist clinical work.
The structure of the post includes: 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care; this includes one PA for predictable on-call clinical work associated with general medical on call work.
As part of the ongoing integration with Weston General hospital, this post is anticipated to also include future session/s (up to 2PA) at Weston General Hospital, in the specialty of the successful candidate, alongside current Respiratory colleagues at UHBW. This is subject to the integration process and job planning.
1.5 PAs for supporting professional activities (including CPD, appraisal, teaching, supervision, audit, research and non-clinical management).
Up to 1 additional SPA session is available by agreement with the Chair of Division for consultants undertaking additional approved SPA activity (e.g. additional responsibilities in training, teaching, research, management or clinical governance).
If a less-than-full-time work pattern is agreed, these commitments will be reduced pro-rata. In association with this post, 1 SPA session is available for work on the Weston merger: this could be undertaken by the appointee (in which case DCC PAs would reduce to 7.5), or by another consultant within the Division, depending on the interests of the appointee

THE HOSPITAL & GENERAL MEDICINE DEPARTMENTS:
Within General Medicine, there are currently 19 Consultants, of which 13 are substantively employed with special interests in Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Acute Medicine, Stroke, Rheumatology and Care of the Elderly.
An integrated service in general medicine and care of the elderly has matured within the Hospital. The team of consultants are enthusiastic and forward thinking. We pride ourselves in being a small, friendly hospital, with real drive to improve both patient care and the working environment for our staff.
In addition to an acute in-patient and out-patient medical service, specialist diabetic and non-invasive cardiology services are provided.
Acute medical work is focused on 195 beds in eight wards. ITU/HDU facilities are based on five beds. The Trust is recognised as providing efficient and well-organised Cancer services. This has been supported by both Regional, and National Accreditation processes. As part of the Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Network, the Trust provides a range of cancer services. Those services already accredited include, Breast Care and Urology.

The hospital will consider senior consultants with no UK experience who are not on the UK specialist register for geriatric medicine.
The Geriatrics department is a small and manageable size with a 28 bedded inpatient ward and various other outlier beds.
Currently no formal geriatric outpatient services are offered with the exception of a Parkinson's / Movement clinic. The department will be looking to develop these in conjunction with skill set of a successful applicant.
The Geriatrics department comprises 3 consultants in elderly care medicine supported by 15 specialty registrars, 9 core medical trainees and FY2's and 9 FY1's working full shifts for GIM on call.
Each consultant will be offered a budget and 30 days of study and professional leave over each 3 year period to pursue their career development activities. Furthermore there is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre which acts as a focus for contract between doctors at all levels an in all disciplines.
Consultants will be encouraged to actively participate in teaching and training of juniors throughout their tenure.
