What is NHS Foundation Trust like?
This NHS Trust provides community and hospital services across the entirety of an area covering a thousand square miles. It consists of 4 main hospitals, the new consultant will work at 3 of these. Each of the hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across the area. In July 2015, the trust was the first to get an increase in the NHS tariff for its services agreed by Monitor (NHS) because of its \"increased costs associated with this trust running health services across multiple sites in rural locations\" and this is expected to increase the trust\'s income by more than £20 million per year. It has also won awards including being awarded first place in the UK top 50 inclusive employers awards 2020, being recognised as the most inclusive employer out of the 110 member companies.
What is Oncology Department like?
One of the largest employers in the area, this trust have approximately 6,000 staff working across 3 sites. The new consultant will be expected to work across at least two of the three sites, which range in sizes from 33 beds to 450, contributing to the acute oncology inpatient service. The Trust has a recognised Cancer Unit, providing systemic therapy for all common tumour sites. It has six Linacs and employs thirteen clinical oncologists and three Medical Oncologists.
There are currently five Medical Oncologists and one Clinical Oncologist employed at the trust, providing acute oncology services, in addition to a site specialised SACT service. There are also three visiting Clinical Oncologists. Inpatients are managed on the acute medical wards and outpatients are seen and treated in dedicated units on all three sites. There is a Medical Oncology SpR on rotation from another hospital attached to the team, three Nurse Practitioners and one AOT CNS to support the acute oncology service, but also chemotherapy clinics on all sites.
What Career Development & Further Opportunities are available?
Career development opportunities are plenty at this post. At this extremely supportive trust there is opportunity for overseas doctors to work towards and complete CESR and to further develop their sub-specialty areas of preference. There will also be opportunity to supervise undergraduate medical students undertaking SAMP/SSM placements in Oncology or to explore more formal teaching roles within the Medical School as all Trust sites have a modern, well-equipped, postgraduate education centre with lecture theatre and library facilities.

What is the department like?
The department consists of 5 consultants along with 3 full time nurse specialists, 2 part time sleep nurse specialists, 1 registrar, 2 trainees and 4 FY doctors in the department. The ward is a 23-bedded unit typically ranging 5-8 patients per days. The hospitals is a modern 27 bedded unit for both Respiratory and general medical patients usually shared by 2-3 consultants in the department.
The service has had a significant modernisation in the last few years expanding junior doctors into subspecialties like Lung Cancer focussing more on EBUS with lymph node aspirate and biopsy, a dedicated plural procedures room, improved thoracoscopy business cases, 10 brand new non-invasive ventilation machines, Participation in the regional asthma network / MDT, Participation in the regional Interstitial Lung Disease Network.
CESR
International candidates are welcome and CESR will be supported. Direct input will be provided on a regular basis from the Clinical Director, with opportunity for shadowing, lists and portfolio building built into the job plan.
The team has recent experience of supporting IMGs with the CESR process, benefiting any newly appointed candidate.

We are recruiting for an experienced and motivated Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine to join a friendly and enthusiastic team in the North West of England.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who are interested in securing CESR within 1 - 2 years. The post involves out-patient and in-patient duties and a regular commitment to both in-reach into the medical admissions unit and on-call for general medicine.
What is the trust like?
The Trust was formed on 1 October 2019 with the merger of two large tertiary trusts partnering with wider areas of the North West of England to become one of the first 14 areas nationally to be confirmed as an Integrated Care System. The trust services to a half a million people. We’re responsible for delivering over 70 services across 15 main locations and we employ over 6500 members of staff.
What is the department like?
The Trust is excited to be developing a Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at the Cumberland Infirmary site which will comprise a 10 bedded HAS unit at CIC, a further 25 acute and rehabilitation beds, and a further 15 acute and rehabilitation beds at WCH. If you successful, you will join the newly forming team and have the opportunity to contribute to this exciting development for our patients in both the Cumberland Infirmary and the West Cumberland Hospital. You would also be instrumental in the establishment of a high quality stroke service across North Cumbria. The planned 7-day service model will allow the delivery of 7-day stroke / TIA clinics which will rapidly speed up diagnosis and therapeutic intervention, and will provide an integrated pathway into community services.
This development was implemented in the last few years, with the new service becoming increasingly embedded into Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) specialist ESSD rehabilitation that is delivered at local level under the joint management of the ICC and the ESSD coordination team.

They offer comprehensive pulmonary function facilitates across the trust including sleep services and bronchial provocation testing. The lung function labs have recently been upgraded to state of the art equipment including a brand new cardiopulmonary exercise machine with excellent exercise physiology research links at Lancaster University.
