What should I know about Psychiatry in the UK?
NHS psychiatrists may see in-patients in a hospital setting, or work within the community. Psychiatrists work across a range of services, such as specialist hospital units, schools, residential care homes, or a combination of settings. However, most work in community mental health teams, out-patient departments and hospital wards.
There are six psychiatry specialties: adult psychiatry, psychiatry of old age, child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, psychiatry of intellectual disability, and psychotherapy. It is possible to sub-specialise in adult psychiatry - in liaison, perinatal, substance misuse or addictions, neuro-psychiatry, eating disorders, rehabilitation and social psychiatry.
What can you expect to do as part of a typical working week in the NHS?
Psychiatrists in the UK often follow a regular Monday-Friday daytime pattern. On call work, especially at associate specialist or consultant level, is generally less onerous than other medical and surgical specialties. The regular work pattern enables an excellent work-life balance.
Hospital work can include ward rounds for acute or long-term patients as well as outpatient clinics. New patients may have appointments lasting an hour, considerably longer than appointments given in other medical specialties. Follow-up appointments may last around 20 or 30 minutes.
Most consultant psychiatrists have around ten hours allocated each week for non-clinical activities including research and audit.
Psychiatrists sometimes see patients on their own in an out-patient clinic. More often, they work as part of a team with colleagues from other professions such as nursing, social work, psychology and occupational therapy.

An opportunity for a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to secure a locum consultant psychiatry post fully supported of CESR Portfolio Pathway and progression towards specialist registration with the GMC. This post has been specifically designed with international applicants in mind, offering experienced psychiatrists the chance to enter the NHS at the consultant grade, reflective of their equivalent overseas experience.
CESR Portfolio Pathway support will be offered through a local programme during the fixed term contract, with the view to progressing to the specialist register and a substantive post with the trust.

The Community Mental Health Teams provide a service to the adult population (18-65 years) across Kent. The teams provide a service to a mixed urban and rural population. The community mental health teams are Multidisciplinary teams providing services for adults of working age group diagnosed with mental health disorders.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Team, just like everyone else, believe that young people are the future, and that everyone should help make a better life for them. The department is transforming their children and young people’s mental health services across Greater Manchester and looking for people to join their fantastic team. They have lots of jobs available from assistant mental health practitioners, staff nurses, senior mental health practitioners, psychotherapists and psychologists.
The service is a 12 bedded unit, and helps children and young people up to the age of 16 years, and provide assessments, intervention and support to their families/carers. The CAMHS inpatient services operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and accept emergency, planned and out of hours admissions. The CAMHS Inpatient services also provides Tier 4 consultation, and advice to other professionals and the successful candidate will take a lead in providing their clinical expertise. The also provide consultation, advice and training to other agencies and accept referrals from a wide range of professionals.
The post holder is expected to take clinical responsibility for all 12 young people who are inpatient on the unit, & manage a caseload of clients who are receiving direct high intensity input. To adhere to the policies & procedures in support of the caseload, maintaining appropriate clinical records, confidentiality & admin.

Join an experienced and high performing Mental Health Single Point of Admission service in Wales providing care for individuals with mental disorders as a Consultant Psychiatrist and contribute to the development of services, including the establishment of a 24-hour single point of admission service. The Community Mental Health Team handles approximately 100 referrals per month. Consultants participate in daily team meetings to discuss and allocate referrals, and a weekly rota system is used for patient allocation. The outpatient caseload for this role includes around 600 patients, with half of them under the care coordination of the CMHT. The team consists of dedicated professionals, including Community Psychiatric Nurses, Social Workers, Healthcare Support Workers, a Psychologist, Medical Secretaries, and administrative staff.

- To Provide advice and initiate prescription of medication used to treat mental health problems.
- To monitor initial progress and when stable/in remission to provide guidance to GPs about continued prescribing.
