WHAT IS THE TRUST LIKE?
The trusts provides both acute hospital and community health care and was formed on 1 July 2018 from the merger of 2 of the main hospitals in the area. The new trust has nearly 10,000 staff and an annual budget in 2019/20 of over £715 million. Currently, The trust has two main acute hospitals in the East of England;
As a trust services include accident and emergency; critical care; planned medical and surgical care, consultant and midwifery-led maternity, neonatal and paediatric care; diagnostic and therapy services; and since October 2015 community hospitals and specialist community services . Community midwifery services are provided to the population of the area.
WHAT IS THE RESPIRATORY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The service are looking for individuals able to run subspecialty respiratory medicine for a population of over 800,000. They wish to develop existing specialist sleep and NIV services and create specialty services in lung cancer and intervention, Bronchiectasis, lung infection, and asthma. Individuals with an interest in any of these sub-speciality areas would be considered.
Both the Hospitals have well established and progressive units providing a wide range of respiratory services to the local population. They pride themselves on their reputation for being a cohesive, supportive and friendly departments. The trust is developing a model of partnership bringing exciting new service development opportunities. To complement the established services they are looking to develop specialist respiratory services to serve the combined catchment areas of both trusts of over 800,000. Growing the department, the service are appointing x2 Consultants who will be based primarily at Ipswich Hospital, one as a replacement post and one new post to expand our compliment to 6 full time Consultants. They aim to make further appointments in due course with the aim of working towards a 7 day service.
They have recently expanded their provision of undergraduate medical education on both sites and there are opportunities for appointees to be formally involved in their education programme. Students from the University of Cambridge University and Norwich medical school are taught in the respiratory department at one of the hospitals. We would welcome applications from those with an interest in medical education. The Respiratory Consultants do not participate in the acute medical take rota, although any appointee may be able to join the rota if they wish.
A procedure room is being created on the new high dependency ward. The trust is currently building a new ambulatory care unit which our department will have access to. The trust is planning to increase ambulatory and interventional services, and would support service development in these areas. They currently have access at Ipswich to Bronchoscopy, Linear EBUS and a full pleural service. They are looking to develop physician led cancer diagnostics with ultrasound guided biopsy and radial EBUS. Medical thoracoscopy is carried out in one of the hospitals along with a future prospect in expanding to the other site as well.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the respiratory team, one of the largest respiratory departments in the country with a breadth of subspecialty interests; ranging from Cystic Fibrosis, ILD including LAM, through asthma, COPD, lung cancer to infections including TB and a regional fungal service.
This post will help the department develop both the COPD and asthma services, working with colleagues to deliver comprehensive integrated care. As a member of a large and dynamic department there are significant opportunities for professional development, including research. Both the asthma and COPD services benefit from academic leads with internationally recognised research profiles.
The successful applicant will have weekly clinics focusing on both COPD and asthma, and will join both the alternate week Asthma MDT and the regional lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) MDT, held 6 times a year. There will also be the opportunity for a monthly bronchoscopy list.

The department:
The department offers modern and well-resourced inpatient facilities on dedicated wards. This includes NIV, High Flow Nasal Oxygen, Step down ventilatory care and pleural ultrasound.
Outpatient services include bronchoscopy lists across all sites with EBUS provision. They offer comprehensive pulmonary function facilitates across the trust including sleep services and bronchial provocation testing. The lung function labs have recently been upgraded to state of the art equipment including a brand new cardiopulmonary exercise machine with excellent exercise physiology research links at Lancaster University.
Specialist clinics are currently offered for lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, asthma, sleep/ventilation and TB.

Joining an established and settled team of 8 respiratory consultants across both sites in the trust, the department has well managed services in lung cancer, sleep, bronchiectasis and COPD.
Whilst any subspecialty is welcome those with asthma, ILD or cancer interests would be especially desirable.
This hospital in the trust is concentrated on the Respiratory outpatient activity and there are established and proactive day hospitals administering omalizumab and IVIG, flush portacaths in addition to well established pathways for ambulatory care of PE and cellulitis.
The hospital has 182 acute medical beds and Monday - Friday all admissions are assessed by the dedicated acute physicians team which allows for a steady and controlled follow of mostly respiratory patients with some general medical patients to the respiratory team.
There is some on call with this position.
