WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Endoscopy Unit at the Hospital is fully JAG accredited and is a purpose built three roomed Endoscopy Unit with modern equipment for cleaning and sterilisation on site. All the Endoscopes are Olympus Endoscopes (290 series) complete with new stacks including two screens for viewing and an integrated colonoscopy scope guide feature. C02 insufflation is available and ERBE diathermy plus access to APC. Darent Valley Hospital is an accredited BCSP site providing colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy procedures.
An Endoscopy Unit Extension with 2 addition rooms and fully JAG accredited decontamination facilities is due to be commissioned. Furthermore, the Endoscopy Unit at the other main hospitals provides diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures. It is progressing through the process of JAG accreditation. There is also Screening Room for ERCP and oesophageal stenting or dilatation equipped with a mobile C arm within the Endoscopy Unit in the largest room which was purpose built for screening procedures.
The gastroenterology team consists of 7 consultants and 2 specialists registrars having the responsibilities for both inpatient and outpatient care. The consultants also actively participate on call rota (at 1 in 50) and the Upper GI bleed rota (at 1 in 7)
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU?
Active participation in Education and Research will be encouraged and supported along with the gastroenterology team having weekly lunchtime education meetings. The hospital has an active Research and Development Team supported by Specialist Research Nurses helping doctor to build their interest in teaching in research.
You will also be responsible for all the multi-disciplinary audit is conducted on a monthly basis, led by a designated Consultant responsible for audit. There are also opportunities for leadership development for medical staff with an interest and potential to take greater responsibility in the Trust. Mentoring support for newly appointed Consultants is also available.
Additionally, active participation in Directorate and departmental multidisciplinary clinical review, educational, strategic and governance meetings is expected in order to support service delivery and development. The department also supports for study leave which is 30 days in three years with £800 per annum towards expenses at the discretion of the Medical Director.

The Team is consist of 4 gastroenterologists, 1 Gastroenterology Specialist Registrar, and 4-6 Junior Doctors. The department also has 2 IBD Nursing Specialists, 3 Liver Nurse Specialists, 2 Nutritional Nurse and 2 Gastro Nurse Specialists/Nurse Endoscopists. The Gastroenterology inpatients are predominantly on one Ward which has 27 beds.The Gastroenterologist on the ward sees referrals from other specialties and takes over care as needed. There is shared care of complex inflammatory bowel disease patients with the surgeons.
The Nutrition Team manages both enteral and parenteral nutrition with two Clinical Nurse Specialists, Specialist Dieticians and input from the Consultant Chemical Pathology. They have a number of patients on Home Parenteral Nutrition. There is a Dietician led coeliac clinic. The Endoscopy Department is supported by 4 Gastroenterologists, 2 upper GI Surgeons who provide the Upper GI Cancer Centre service for North Wales, 4 Colorectal Surgeons and 3 Nurse Endoscopists. The team is able to offer a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy services along with bowel screening service.
The appointee will be expected to bring innovation and vision to develop the service to ensure it is fit for the future needs of the population we serve whilst ensuring that current service provision continues to be high-value and delivered to the highest standard. The post holder is expected to participate in training for CMT trainees. There is a weekly teaching session to cover the College GIM curriculum, and small group teaching for the Membership is arranged as required.

The Gastroenterology Department is part of the Division of Medicine and Emergency Care. The gastroenterology service is Consultant led and is committed to delivering the highest possible standards of clinical care. The Department has recently received further investment and is now funded for x8 full time Consultants. Supporting these Consultants are one Specialty Doctor, two Specialty Trainees (ST3+), two CMTs, one GP Trainee one F2, one F1, two WTE hepatology / liver Advanced Nurse Practitioners and one WTE inflammatory bowel disease Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The gastroenterology in-patients are located on one ward. The department has use of a Planned Investigations Unit (PIU) and a purpose-built Treatment Centre for day case treatments / procedures. The Endoscopy Unit is based at Leighton Hospital. The Endoscopy Unit has recently been refurbished and provides 5 modern endoscopy rooms, one of which is equipped with digital imaging facilities. The post holder will be provided with secretarial support, office facilities and a computer with appropriate IT support and Internet access.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake outpatient clinics, endoscopy, in-patient ward rounds and participate in an out of hours upper GI bleed rota when this commences later in the year.
