The Emergency Medicine Department was purposely built in 2014 and offers state- of-the-art facilities. There are approximately 58,000 attendances a year, of which 14,000 are under 18. The ED is co-located with the GP Out of Hours service and enjoys an excellent relationship with the service. Currently there are 4 substantive EM Consultants and 2 NHS locum Consultant appointments. There are no long-term agency locum Consultant staff.
The department provides 24-hour cover by a senior shop floor decision maker and the Tier 2 level is provided by a mixture of Specialty doctors and EPIC Clinical Fellows. Currently there are 5 EPIC Clinical Fellows and 13 Specialty Doctors, some of whom work less than full time for the ED. The junior tier currently has 12 doctors comprising a mixture of GPST trainees, Foundation doctors, and Clinical Fellows. Additionally, there are 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and these contribute to the junior Tier 1. The minors service is provided by 7 ENP’s, and 2 dedicated ED Extended Scope Physiotherapists.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to quality improvement work in the ED, and support is available to ensure projects are sustainable and successful. The post holder will need to be familiar with modern models of Emergency Care in order to support the department in its goals of improving performance and patient safety.

There are 4 specialty doctors, 1 trainee and 3 senior clinical fellows who complement the middle grade day time and out of hours rota. This post is to complete the full complement of middle grades in order to work a 1 in 9 on call rota.
The birth rate at the Hospital maternity unit has remained steady around 2700 per annum. The Labour Ward, maternity wards, Special Care Baby Unit, Obstetric theatre, Intensive Care, Gynaecology ward and the main operating theatres are located on the first floor of the hospital. There is a dedicated Obstetric theatre within the labour ward complex. There is a dedicated modern ultrasound machine, housed in the antenatal clinic area used for fetal scanning including interventional procedures like amniocentesis and chorionic villous sampling.
The post holder will involve routine clinical and on call commitments with opportunity to complete ATSM in certain areas, as well as research opportunities.

The Respiratory Medicine Team is a fully integrated team that works closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team that is involved with the care and support of patients with Respiratory illness. They are involved in both the acute management of patients admitted to Hospital as well as the chronic disease management of respiratory patients. The Service covers all respiratory patients in the acute trust and community. The Team offers support to patients at home following acute exacerbation of their chronic respiratory condition that has required admission in to hospital. They provide support and information for lung cancer patients and palliative care for patients who have non-malignant disease. The team also provides education for all staff.

The Gastroenterology Department is part of the Division of Medicine and Emergency Care. The gastroenterology service is Consultant led and is committed to delivering the highest possible standards of clinical care. The Department has recently received further investment and is now funded for x8 full time Consultants. Supporting these Consultants are one Specialty Doctor, two Specialty Trainees (ST3+), two CMTs, one GP Trainee one F2, one F1, two WTE hepatology / liver Advanced Nurse Practitioners and one WTE inflammatory bowel disease Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The gastroenterology in-patients are located on one ward. The department has use of a Planned Investigations Unit (PIU) and a purpose-built Treatment Centre for day case treatments / procedures. The Endoscopy Unit is based at Leighton Hospital. The Endoscopy Unit has recently been refurbished and provides 5 modern endoscopy rooms, one of which is equipped with digital imaging facilities. The post holder will be provided with secretarial support, office facilities and a computer with appropriate IT support and Internet access.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake outpatient clinics, endoscopy, in-patient ward rounds and participate in an out of hours upper GI bleed rota when this commences later in the year.

WHAT IS THE ACUTE MEDICINE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Team consists of Patient Support Workers, HCAs, Staff Nurses, a team of Deputy Sisters, two experienced Ward Sisters and four Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) that are enthusiastic, hard working and always working closely together.
The Team has approximately 20 patients per ward round. The current rota is annualised with an eight week rolling pattern. There are two Acute Physicians running the AMU and acute take 0800-2030 with SDEC Consultant cover 0900-1700daily during the week. The weekend frequency is currently 1 in 8. SPA is organised flexibly. The AMU at Poole Hospital is a 30 bedded assessment and short stay unit for general medical and acute medical patients. It receives approximately 8000-9000 patients per year.
The post holder will lead and run the AEC Clinic, alongside the ANPs, during their allocated clinical sessions. The post holder will provide teaching and training to junior doctors, nurse practitioners and allied professions within acute medicine. The post holder will be working at both sites and will have access to a fully-equipped Consultant’s office which includes all the required information technology.

THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:

The Trust is a clinically led service, drawing on the knowledge and experience of our team of 27 Oncologists. The Consultants delivering the service are involved in National and International teaching and research.
Across two sites, the radiotherapy department is well equipped with state of the art radiotherapy equipment. They are proud to be one of the few departments in the UK to have an Adaptive Varian ETHOS™, allowing real time adaptive radiotherapy, plus seven Varian Truebeam® (one STX with ExacTrac and four with 6 degrees of freedom couch). Furthermore, they have an established SABR programme for lung cancer, and oligometastes.
The Trust also provide a nationally renowned High dose rate brachytherapy service, including gynecological, prostate, rectal and oesophageal brachytherapy; with a dedicated brachytherapy theatre on-site, which is also used to house the Contact radiotherapy machine for rectal treatments.
There is a large SACT service, treating up to 200 patients a day across our four sites, with an ongoing focus on delivering chemo closer to home. Additionally, The Trust has a well established, innovative nurse led service, with nurse led SACT clinics and PICC service running daily.
The dedicated oncology / haemato-oncology inpatient ward (Onslow) has 34 beds. Chilworth Day Unit has designated facilities for day care chemotherapy and procedures. Chemotherapy is also provided in the community via a mobile infusion and injection service, with partnership with McKesson UK and Lloyd’s pharmacy Clinical Homecare Ltd (LPCH).

The Trust also has a well-established oncology research department, providing the opportunity for the post holder to run and develop clinical trials. There is a strong record of recruitment into clinical trials, including NCRN, commercial and Phase I/II trials, the latter in collaboration with the Clinical Research Centre at the local University. Strong links exist between the Centre and the University; four of our Oncology Consultants hold joint appointments with the University. WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Team uses quality improvement to continuously transform their service. The team communicates openly in a consistent and honest way. They embrace innovation, research and applying evidence-based practice whilst evaluating their performance. They treat patients with suspected minor strokes and Transient Ischaemic Attacks (TIAs) in a daily assessment unit in an attempt to prevent further larger strokes occurring.
The team currently has six stroke consultants, two academic consultants, one neurologist and one acute medicine consultant, providing a 24 hour 7 day a week service. Care ranges from emergency assessment and treatments (including clot-busting thrombolysis therapy and clot retrieval) in the first few hours after stroke to rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy). These help the stroke survivor to return home and regain independence after a stroke.
The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic team with a specialist interest in stroke care. This appointment will play a key part in further developments of the stroke pathway, providing input to hyper acute stroke, acute stroke, intensive rehab and continuing stroke rehabilitation.
