Department and Trust overview:
This is a fixed term post joining an established and growing team. The post will involve responsibility for stroke prevention, hyper-acute and acute stroke care, including proactive in-reach, stroke rehabilitation and a commitment to the General Medicine on call rota.
The Stroke Team are part of the Medicine for the Elderly Department, but suitably qualified applicants from any parent speciality are encouraged to apply.
The department provides a full range of services to a population of approx 400,000.
The stroke service admits approximately 500 patients per year, and sees about 800 patients per year in the fast track TIA clinic. Hyper-acute and acute stroke is managed in the Bristol Royal Infirmary on the current 26 bedded acute stroke unit (ASU) which includes 10 hyper-acute beds. Patients requiring longer inpatient rehabilitation are cared for in the 16 bedded dedicated stroke rehabilitation unit.

The Trust provides a broad range of secondary services, including specialist emergency medicine (e.g. trauma, cardiac and stroke). It also provides a number of leading edge tertiary services, such as liver transplantation, neurosciences, haemato-oncology, foetal medicine, cardiology and cardiac surgery, on a regional and national basis.
Overview of the department and post:
The Stroke service is highly performing and it is staffed by a dynamic team. The creation of this post is one of a number of initiatives to meet growing demand within the department, expanding the service. Over the past year, activity from the Emergency Department has increased and a greater number of patients are receiving treatment and rehabilitation on the Stroke Unit (SU).
The post holder will work across both the Hyper-acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and SU and, together with the multi–disciplinary team, provide and further develop care for stroke and other neurovascular patients from the local and regional catchment areas.
Other exciting developments across the service include the addition of a Stroke Specialist Registrar post together with an increase in junior doctor staffing levels, 7 day therapy for patients on both the HASU and SU and provisions for King’s College Hospital to become part of a 24:7 thrombectomy network in London.
You will work in all the major areas of Stroke Medicine that include the hyper acute management of TIA and Stroke, acute care, rehabilitation and prevention. You will work closely with colleagues in the allied specialties of neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation and vascular surgery.

A fantastic opportunity for specialist in geriatric or elderly care medicine to settle into their first consultant post and work towards their CESR application, if that is the intention.
The hospital will consider senior consultants with no UK experience who are not on the UK specialist register for geriatric medicine.
The Geriatrics department is a small and manageable size with a 28 bedded inpatient ward and various other outlier beds.
Currently no formal geriatric outpatient services are offered with the exception of a Parkinson's / Movement clinic. The department will be looking to develop these in conjunction with skill set of a successful applicant.
The Geriatrics department comprises 3 consultants in elderly care medicine supported by 15 specialty registrars, 9 core medical trainees and FY2's and 9 FY1's working full shifts for GIM on call.
Each consultant will be offered a budget and 30 days of study and professional leave over each 3 year period to pursue their career development activities. Furthermore there is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre which acts as a focus for contract between doctors at all levels an in all disciplines.
Consultants will be encouraged to actively participate in teaching and training of juniors throughout their tenure.

The department is well staffed and the new appointee will join a team of 20 oncologists. The post is predominantly based in the trusts dedicated cancer centre. The post would focus on colorectal or upper GI cancer and cancer of the unknown primary (CUP) with possible work in other disease sites if needed.
