What is the department & team like?
The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 30-bed assessment and short stay unit for general and acute medical patients, handling approximately 8,000 to 9,000 patients annually. Adjacent to the unit is the Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) area, which includes three clinic rooms and a four-trolley assessment area. The AMU team comprises one ACM SpR, one ACCS trainee, one F1, two Physician Associates, and two F2/3s, along with 10 ANPs for Ambulatory Care (two per day, Monday to Friday, and one on weekends), and a dedicated DVT Band 6 nurses. The on-call medical team is based within the AMU in blocks from Monday to Thursday and Friday to Sunday. This team includes one SpR, one SHO, and one F1.
The Acute Medicine Directorate has experienced rapid change and improvement in its SDEC models over the past year. With new investment, they are looking to build on this progress and continue their transformation journey towards the 2026 Major Emergency Site model, as outlined in the Dorset Clinical Services review. This fixed-term position is to replace a colleague who is leaving, with the expectation that it will become a full-time substantive post. New post holders will be expected to work flexibly across both sites.

What is the Respiratory Medicine Department & Team like?
NUH is one the largest respiratory departments in the country with a wealth of subspecialty services, ranging from asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, ILD including LAM, through lung cancer to infections including TB. In particular they are a regional centre for complex ventilation and sleep. The Respiratory service runs on both campuses; therefore cross site working is a requirement of the post. Respiratory inpatient beds are currently predominantly on the City campus. NUH has a dedicated respiratory assessment unit (RAU), taking direct admissions via 999 ambulance service, as well as transfers from the Emergency Department based at Queen’s Medical Centre campus. RAU has 20 beds, including 4 side rooms, and is led by a strong team of nurses, including Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and a team of doctors, including a dedicated Trust grade post. On the QMC campus we have the 12 bedded Advanced Respiratory Care Unit (ARCU). The Respiratory team also provides in-reach cover to the Emergency department and acute medical admissions area based on the QMC campus. Consultants in Acute Medicine conduct thorough ward rounds starting at 08:00, followed by a secondary review at 14:00. They collaborate closely with junior staff to ensure timely patient assessments between rounds. The unit works in conjunction with the Rapid Assessment and Frailty Team (RAFT) to facilitate prompt discharges to home or community support when suitable. With approximately 10,000 patient assessments annually, translating to roughly 35-50 patients daily, the AMU handles a broad spectrum of acute medical conditions. All referrals to the AMU are streamlined through the Medical Streaming bleep, managed by a designated senior nurse serving as the central point of contact. WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Trusts Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is an award winning service and has received specific CQC recognition as being outstanding in 3 categories (Caring, responsive and well-led) they credit this to the outstanding people we have delivering care to our service users. It is a busy team covering 2 sites, and the team works on an outpatient model. The caseload for this post is estimated to be 120. The CAMHS department is part of the East and North Strategic Business Unit in the NHS Foundation Trust. CAMHS is divided into 5 service divisions.
The CAMHS Community Eating Disorders Service is a newly expanded, multi-disciplinary team which provides specialist CAMHS input to children and young people with eating disorders. It provides home-based treatment, out-patient treatment and gate-keeps referrals to in-patient services. The team has a very positive reputation and the ED practitioners have won numerous Trust wide and national awards. The team has been successful in attracting Government funding to allow service expansion.
The post holder is Providing consultation, advice and appropriate support to professionals in the wider network of the young person and/or family. The post holder is expected to contribute to the supervision of the trainees and the specialty doctor allocated to the service. The post holder is expected to provide opportunities for case based discussion and teaching to the MDT.

The Trust covers a mixed rural and urban area, including large and smaller towns. The area has excellent connections to London and the rest of the country. A large number of psychiatrists working in the trust choose to commute from London, some locations can be reached from London in 17 – 30 minutes depending on the locality. By car from several parts of North London the commute is under 30 mins.
The trust is a situated in beautiful county with picturesque, rural villages and a number of lovely, vibrant towns and garden cities. It is also well known for its excellent schools, stunning countryside and fantastic local facilities which provide plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy yourself away from work.
There are three major roads going North-South (the M1, the A1 and the A10). In addition the M25 passes through. Train services are also excellent with the journey time to London from some towns is less than 20 - 30 minutes. Education is of a high standard. Currently more than 160,000 children are educated in the county’s network of 566 schools made up of 17 nursery schools, 426 primary schools, 9 middle schools, 78 secondary schools, 27 Special Schools and 8 Education Support Centres. Exam results and SATs continue to be above the national average and the ration of pupils to teachers is among the best in the shire counties. There is also a wide range of public/private schools to choose from.
