A large South-Eastern Trust are looking for a full-time, permanent Clinical Oncology Specialty Doctor across all specialisms. The trust is considering either UK or Overseas trained doctors in other specialties. The trust will support with CESR.  

This is a high performing and supportive department for overseas doctors new to the NHS, or UK-based doctors looking to further careers in the UK.

THE TRUST:

The Trust consists of 10,000 employees, and provides services to approximately 700,000 people living in surrounding areas.  

These services form an integral part of South-Eastern Cancer Services. The Department of Oncology is managed within the Oncology, Haematology, Radiotherapy and Breast Services Clinical Delivery Group which is part of ESNEFT’s Cancer & Diagnostics Division.

THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:  
The Oncology Team is located across two sites. There is also an opportunity and an expectation that some cross site working will take place in the future.  The Department has a full range of equipment, which includes four matched Varian TrueBeam Linacs, undertaking IGRT and IMRT. Localisation is carried out on a Toshiba Wide Bore CT scanner and planning is carried out using Prosoma Virtual Simulation Software. All of these units are fully networked with the Eclipse planning systems via the ARIA network. There are full mouldroom facilities and an Orthovoltage and Superficial unit as well as HDR brachytherapy.

The Trust provide state-of-the-art facilities in which to deliver first class medical care and the most advanced Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy treatments, alongside a range of complementary and alternative therapies, in a purpose-built sympathetic environment, which enables the best possible holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to the care of all cancer patients and their loved ones. There are currently 28 beds on West Bergholt Ward for Oncology and Haematology patients. The Oncology Department has close links with St Helena Hospice and Farleigh Hospice, both of which provide in-patient and day-care facilities. The hospital Specialist Palliative Care team consists of a Palliative Care consultant and several Nurse Practitioners.

The department has three linear accelerators and a ‘decant’ bunker. Each machine has 2 or 3 photon energies, a range of electron energies, IMRT and VMAT, CBCT capabilities (Varian on board imager) and respiratory gating, the latest Truebeam also has 6DoF couch. In addition both TrueBeam have flattening filter free energies.

The team works with people for up to 3 years, and has a caseload of approximately 150. You will receive support to complete Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007). The post holder will attend and contribute to weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings, providing medical input and advice to cases being discussed. The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult Psychiatry, working in both the community mental health team and the memory clinic. In addition to this post, three additional CMHTs make up the older adult community service for the borough. The personnel of the CMHT include: medical staff, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapist, and Psychiatric Social Workers. There is a Psychological Therapy Department which provides therapy for older adults and which works across CMHTs in the Borough as does the Occupational Therapy Service.

The post holder will have responsibility for the diagnostic assessment and treatment of older adult psychiatric patients from the designated catchment area referred to and accepted by the service. Outpatient clinics and domiciliary visits in the community will constitute the majority of the direct clinical care provided by the post holder.

The department is responsible for SACT services for adults with solid tumours in the region of Wales. The majority (60%) of day-case services are delivered on site, while there is a long-established network of outreach sites in LHB acute and community hospitals, and based with 3^rd-sector providers.

Based on its professional and public reputation for delivering excellence in terms of patient and staff experience, the Trust has has been selected to lead the ‘Transforming Cancer Services’ programme and to build a new hospital. The new site will be a £200million pound development and will open in the coming years. It will be nearly twice the size of the current hospital and will be equipped with brand new, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities

The new site will have 10 new linear accelerators, 2 CT and 2 MRI scanners to support precision image-guided and adaptive radiotherapy. There will be a dedicated clinical trials treatment unit including a 10-bedded early phase trials unit, and 2 isotope cubicles for molecular radiotherapy treatments.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Doctors wishing to pursue specialty training in either Medical or Clinical Oncology will be served well by time working in such a developed cancer centre. That being said, the department have overseen the CESR progress of many overseas doctors and have good understanding and experience of it. For more senior doctors holding FRCR or MRCP qualifications this may be the best route to attaining Specialist Registration in your oncological specialty. 

The Trust provides fantastic career development opportunities and once middle grade doctors have attained their CESR in Clinical or Medical - there is real opportunity to begin specialising and leading on any major cancer site within the NHS cancer pathway. THE NHS TRUST: 

This NHS Trust was formed in April 2000. The Trust consists of two District General Hospitals providing services to approximately 450,000 people living in surrounding areas.  

The Trust consists of several hospitals: its Cancer Centre in particular is renowned and held in high esteem within the South-East of England. 

THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:  

The Oncology Centre receives approximately 8,000 new patients every year and increasing and is within the top 25% of Trusts in the UK for cancer waiting times, meeting the 85% 62-day national standard consistently since August 2019, hitting its 2-week-wait target since September 2019. The Centre has an income of £50m and is home to a custom designed department with dedicated radiotherapy and outpatient facilities as part of the main District General Hospital, which was upgraded in 2012.  

Due to recent funding the Trust has been able to purchase five new state of the art Varian Trubeam Linear Accelerators across its Oncology Centre. Over the 2 sites we have 9 Linear Accelerator Treatment Machines and 3 CT Planning Simulators.  

The research department is made up of more than 60 dedicated staff and recruits around 3000 patients a year to clinical studies across 24 different specialities. The trust benefits from being near academic partners such as Universities and local Medical Schools (KMMS). Additionally, the trust has studies open that are interventional and observational, as well as studies that investigate genetic profiling. Within radiotherapy, the Trust are also undertaking SABR trials. We have many clinicians that support oncology research trials within various specialities.

Maidstone Hospital, part of Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust are looking for a full-time, permanent Clinical Oncology Consultant specialising in Colorectal, Lung, Acute Oncology and Breast. THE NHS TRUST: 

This NHS Trust was formed in April 2000. The Trust consists of two District General Hospitals providing services to approximately 450,000 people living in surrounding areas.  

The Trust consists of several hospitals: its Cancer Centre in particular is renowned and held in high esteem within the South-East of England. 

THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND TEAM:  

The Oncology Centre receives approximately 8,000 new patients every year and increasing and is within the top 25% of Trusts in the UK for cancer waiting times, meeting the 85% 62-day national standard consistently since August 2019, hitting its 2-week-wait target since September 2019. The Centre has an income of £50m and is home to a custom designed department with dedicated radiotherapy and outpatient facilities as part of the main District General Hospital, which was upgraded in 2012.  

Due to recent funding the Trust has been able to purchase five new state of the art Varian Trubeam Linear Accelerators across its Oncology Centre. Over the 2 sites we have 9 Linear Accelerator Treatment Machines and 3 CT Planning Simulators.  

The research department is made up of more than 60 dedicated staff and recruits around 3000 patients a year to clinical studies across 24 different specialities. The trust benefits from being near academic partners such as Universities and local Medical Schools (KMMS). Additionally, the trust has studies open that are interventional and observational, as well as studies that investigate genetic profiling. Within radiotherapy, the Trust are also undertaking SABR trials. We have many clinicians that support oncology research trials within various specialities.

The service is for men over the age of 18 years with a mental illness who require assessment and treatment in hospital.

Patients are also offered the following treatments and therapies:

• Occupational therapy – helps with individual or group activities and daily living skills
• Physiotherapy – help with mobility or movement problems or by providing access to gym facilities
• Psychology – this is dependent on your need at the time of admission
• Exercise therapy

Acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units across the NHS Trust were all rated as 'good' by the CQC. The services were found to be providing effective care. All patients had a care plan which was regularly updated and patients had access to a range of care and treatment options which were in line with national guidance. Staff are supervised effectively and have access to additional specialist training, including CESR support.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TEAM LIKE?
The Children and Young People’s Service provides a single service to all children and young people aged 0-18 years living in the city, and surrounding area, who present with mental health difficulties. This includes children and young people who may be living in difficult and challenging circumstances.

Services for children and young people with a learning disability are provided through collaboration between the Children and Young People’s Services and Community Learning Disability Team.

Services for children and young people experiencing psychosis are provided through collaboration between Children and Young People’s Services and the Early Intervention in Psychosis Team.

The service is also able to provide:

• Assessment, diagnosis and intervention on a range of mental health issues.
• Intensive response and home-based treatment for those children and young people whose mental health is causing significant concern.
• An intensive Eating Disorder Service to support children and young people on the eating disorder pathway who are at risk of an inpatient admission.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TEAM LIKE?
The Older People’s Community service is delivered through three Community Treatment Teams (CTT). The CTTs comprise multi-professional teams including: Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Support Workers. The CTTs provide a service to people with both functional and/or organic disorders, and are able to work flexibly across geographical boundaries in response to workload pressures. The CTT is supported by the Memory Assessment and Management Service (MAMS). MAMS provides assessment for early cognitive impairment and/or complex cognitive problems associated with other conditions. It operates across the city & region, providing outpatient and home based assessment and treatment services. Additionally, there is a Young Onset Dementia Team which provides specialist follow up for people living with dementia aged under 65.
