WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The Team is a group of determined doctors that is based at one of the NHS Trust\'s hospital. The inpatient teams are managed by the ward managers and deputies. The department is very much focused in providing efficient and high-quality inpatient care and in developing and embedding service improvement. The successful candidate will be joining a team that works closely together in a supportive and collaborative manner, and have close links with our community teams to ensure that they provide high quality, safe and effective care. The Consultants have their own office in the administrative area of the hospital with IT access.
The Mental Health Unit has 4 acute admissions wards, each with 17 beds, except for one of the wards that has 16 beds. Admissions are from the local CMHTs, HTTs or Psychiatric liaison services; all admissions are gatekept by HTT. Current bed occupation is at approximately 90-95% but the Trust has a bed occupancy project to reduce this to 85% over the next 12 months. On average 75% of admissions are under the Mental Health Act, with an average of 4 admissions per week. This results in Tribunals and Managers Hearing on average fortnightly. The team therefore works closely with bed managers and HTT to ensure that there is appropriate throughput through the service.
The post holder will have principal duties to provide clinical care to the residents in their covered areas admitted to the ward. The post holder will provide joint leadership with the ward manager, for the performance culture of the ward, ensuring best practice is employed across the ward, and that the Trust’s quality and productivity targets are met. The post holder will be expected to participate in Quality Improvement and service evaluation projects and will be encouraged to undertake any research which may be relevant to either short or long-term service improvement.

The team is made up of learning disability nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and psychologists. They deliver a specialist assessment and intervention plan, which focuses on health inequalities, behaviour, risk, sensory, communication and psychological needs. They work in partnership with families and agencies to achieve positive outcomes for the patients in their home, community and other relevant settings.
The Team accepts referrals from service users, carers, social workers, GP\'s and other health professionals. All referrals will go through a screening process which checks whether you are eligible to access the service. In previous years, their colleagues have picked them as winners of the Principles of Care Awards, for their work with Down\'s Syndrome and dementia patients. The population is around 191,830 (ONS Data). At present, around 4144 people, within the borough, have a known learning disability, with the five year forecast showing this to increase to 4236 by mid-2025. Both departments have extensive support staff which includes 7 clinical oncology registrars, 4 medical oncology registrars and SHOs on a variety of training schemes. There are 39 funded beds.

The oncology research team is dynamic and innovative, comprising research nurses, radiographers, pharmacists, clinical trials assistants and R&D colleagues, supporting a large portfolio of clinical trials.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The department holds a weekly staff educational meeting, a Consultant-led Radiology meeting, and regular departmental consultant meetings, with two monthly clinical governance sessions. Consultants do not work in isolation, and are partnered in pairs in each base ward area at any one time, allowing opportunity for collaborative working and mutual support. The department takes part in regular presentations at the Grand Round and has a well-established postgraduate and undergraduate medical training programme.
The department provides undergraduate teaching for third/fourth/fifth year medical students and contributes to medical school examinations. The specialty currently manage patients across a number of inpatient services. These include the review of acute admissions in the Emergency Zone, a newly created Acute Frailty Unit with 32 beds, with post-admission short stay capacity. There are two complex care wards that has 32 beds on each ward, with a further short stay bed base (c.16 beds). Transitional post- acute care beds are located in a nearby ward, which includes 70 beds.
The post holder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the post holder is absent. Diagnosis and management of older patients presenting to the Trust with a wide range of conditions. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in liaison with Consultant colleagues.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
The team is a mix of professionals from different disciplines including doctors in psychiatry and neurology, nurse therapists trained in physical and mental health, psychological therapy, physiotherapy & occupational therapy. They work with patients who have a mixture of different problems including mental illness associated with neurological diseases, epilepsy and non-epileptic attacks, functional neurological symptoms & neurological sleep disorders. They aim to provide high quality specialist assessment and treatment plans that incorporate expertise in both physical and mental health.
Being a part of the neuroscience department, they work closely with our colleagues in neurology and neurosurgery. They also provide neuropsychiatry support for the mental health liaison team for inpatients in other wards at Southmead Hospital. Their outpatient clinics take referrals from across the south west from general practitioners, neurologists, neurosurgeons and psychiatrists. Their inpatient service is situated within the Rosa Burden Centre. We have two inpatient beds for patients with neuropsychiatric conditions, and two inpatient beds for assessment of sleep disorders.
The post-holder will divide the management of the 29 Level 1, and 23 Level 2 in-patients, with the two Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, depending on medical/psychiatric need. In addition to the session of NBT Outpatient Clinic work, there is a further session allocated to providing support for the community neurorehabilitation team based at the Head Injury Therapy Unit (HITU).
