WHAT IS THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?

The Oncology Department operates within the Cancer Centre Directorate, which is a part of the Planned Care Group at the Hospital. As a Cancer Centre, the hospital actively participates in its regional Cancer Alliance. The Consultant team consists of two medical oncologists (soon to be three) and nine clinical oncologists who are primarily stationed at the Cancer Centre in the Hospital. They conduct outpatient sessions and chemotherapy clinics in various nearby locations.

The service participates in multidisciplinary team meetings. The Trust has a dedicated Acute Oncology Service led by one of the Medical Oncologists, with support from senior Clinical Nurse Specialists. In addition, there is a shared Oncology and Haematology ward with 20+ beds. Inpatient care for oncology patients is managed by the appropriate medical or surgical teams, with regular input from the Acute Oncology and specialist oncology teams.

The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Oncology department with the present consultants. The post holder will be provided with a designated office base with full secretarial and administrative support. The Department is an established high-quality multidisciplinary community & liaison Perinatal Mental Health Service across five Boroughs. The service specification is defined in line with the standards recommended by the RCPsych CR197, the Perinatal Quality Network and the Pan London Perinatal Mental Health Network. In the area served by the NHS Foundation Trust, there are four Maternity Units with a projected delivery rate of more than 6,000/year. In addition, there are approximately 4,000 deliveries in the private sector. The team have the capacity of enabling the delivery of evidence-based perinatal mental health care through a coordinated multidisciplinary specialist approach across maternity, primary and secondary care, tertiary specialist services, social care and voluntary sector.

The service operates at the interface between one of the Trust\'s hospital maternity unit and psychiatry with an outreach arm in the community in the form of home visits, satellite clinics, joint case management with caseload midwifery and a perinatal mental health specialist Health Visitor and NGOs. The service works closely with the liaison psychiatric team with clinical cross cover arrangements for annual and study leave. The Team Consists of: 0.5 WTE team manager, 0.5 WTE consultant psychiatrist in perinatal, 1 WTE specialty doctor (post advertised), 1 WTE Medical secretary, Band 4, 1 WTE Band 8a Psychologist, 0.8 WTE Band 8a Psychotherapist 7, 3 WTE band 7 specialist psychiatric Nurses, 1 WTE Band 6 OT, 0.6 WTE band 7 social worker, 0.6 WTE nursery nurse, and 0.6 WE peer support worker.

The post-holder will work with a medical team consisting of a Consultant Psychiatrist. WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?

The Old Age Psychiatry Team (Memory Assessment and Management Service) provides assessment and initial diagnosis to patients of all ages where there is a suspected dementia. It operates across Newcastle and North-Tyneside. The team works closely with the older adults Community Treatment Teams (CTT), which covers Newcastle North and East; Newcastle West; and North Tyneside. The department includes a specialist Dementia. The team receives approximately 100 referrals per month for patients who are low-complex, and where there is a high likelihood of a dementia diagnosis. Most new referrals are seen by nurses, discussed at the daily MDT meeting, and then offered a diagnostic appointment with a doctor, senior nurse or psychologist.

The Young Onset Dementia Team provides specialist follow up for people living with dementia aged under 65. It is a well-established multi-disciplinary team within Older Adults Community Services, and the sessions allocated provide opportunities for specialist assessment and support for this group of patients, and the chance to develop greater integration with the Old Age Psychiatry Team. Most appointments will be conducted in the out-patient setting, but home visits are also offered for patients based on their clinical need. Referrals are reviewed at a daily triage meeting and new assessments are allocated to the most appropriate member of staff.

The post holder will be expected to see more complex new patients (approximately 1 per week), conduct diagnostic appointments (approximately 10 per week) and to lead the MDT meeting (2 per week). The post-holder is expected to be committed to delivering excellence in clinical care, provide medical leadership to and work effectively with the multidisciplinary MAMS service and Young Onset Dementia teams, promote the safety and well-being of the patients we serve, and to respect the rights and the dignity of patients.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Team is a small cohesive community based multi-disciplinary team. They are a team of outstanding doctors working together to provide the best service their patients can have. The team offers assessments and treatments to a wide variety of clinical presentations. They provide Early Intervention Service for the 13 to 18-year-old as well as assessment and treatment of young people presenting with high risk and severe life threatening self-harm. The Adolescent Mental Health Team is composed of a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (joint consultant team-leads, this post and higher trainee), Systemic Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy and Mental Health Nursing.

The team model includes joint working between Psychiatry and allocated care-coordinator as well as individual working with young people and their families to provide developmentally informed evidence-based treatments. The Team offers neurodevelopmental assessments including ADHD, learning disability and Autism. Also to offer psycho-education and feedback to patients and their carers; and commence and/or monitor appropriate medication under supervision. 

The post holder will provide assessments and treatment of young people presenting with severe and enduring mental health difficulties as part of a multi-disciplinary team assessment. The successful candidate will provide appropriate medical monitoring, psychiatric and therapeutic follow-up and treatment of a case load of young people under supervision of the Consultant. The post-holder will provide a clinical psychiatric service, including assessment, feedback and psychoeducation, risk management as well as holistic care plan to children and adolescents.

The Ward is a 14 Bed, mixed gender assessment ward based in Worcester. The ward takes all admissions from the community for patients in acute crisis. The ethos of the ward is dynamic assessment, allowing staff to work on identifying, and safely managing patient’s needs. The ward\'s role is to formulate care plans, assess risk and plan each patient’s progression over a 14 day period.

The team is a set of innovative & experienced consultants that sees all young people, up to their 18th birthday. The team delivers a full range of services to children and young people including primary mental health input. Additional support come from the Early intervention in Psychosis team which provides intervention for psychosis (covering people between the ages of 14 – 35 with emerging or apparent psychosis).

The Crisis Service, which provides for the assessment of emergencies during normal working hours and at the weekend during the day and by the HOPE team for more intensive outpatient intervention (see below for more details); Extended HOPE provides consultation and assessment to young people in crisis, out of normal working hours. Further, the eating disorders team and the Specialist CAMHS team for adopted and looked after children (established in early 2010) provide input across the county. Access CAMHS provides a single point of access for both CAMHS community team and Primary Mental health team referrals.

The post holder is expected to provide a diagnostic, assessment and treatment service for children and adolescents with a mental health problem. The post holder is to provide consultation and liaison with other services, including paediatrics, children’s service, adult psychiatry and education, as appropriate.
