A large south-central trust is looking for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in Lung / SABR on a permanent, full-time basis, considering either UK or overseas trained doctors in Clinical Oncology. The trust will support with CESR, and help consultants to develop their sub-specialty interests.
This is a high-performing and supportive department for overseas doctors new to the NHS, or UK-based doctors looking to further careers in the NHS. This role will provide an excellent springboard with which to further develop as a consultant, with substantial career development opportunities forthcoming.
WHAT IS THE ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT & LIKE?
This role will focus on supporting the existing Consultant Clinical Oncologists in the department, primarily in the care of lung cancer patients focussing on the implementation of SABR for lung cancer in 2021.The oncology department at the trust is multi-disciplined and highly motivated in the region leading implementation of SABR.
The diagnostic imaging department supports acute and cancer services with CT scanning, MRI, a proactive interventional radiology team, on site PET scanning, nuclear medicine, specialty reporting and dedicated support to cancer MDTs The Oncology department sees approximately 3,500 new referrals per year and delivers around 22,000 episodes of chemotherapy per year. The department has extensive support staff. Including, 7 clinical oncology registrars, 4 medical oncology registrars and SHOs on a variety of training schemes. There are 39 funded beds.
The oncology department utilises world-leading technologies, machines and resources. Including 4 matched Varian linear accelerators and a Toshiba CT simulator. There is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Oncologist to join this growing department, which has achieved great results in recent years.

The oncology research team is dynamic and innovative, comprising research nurses, radiographers, pharmacists, clinical trials assistants and R&D colleagues, supporting a large portfolio of clinical trials. The Trust is firmly committed to offering the advantages of clinical research participation to as many of its patients as possible.

Catchment area
The hospital is a modern district general hospital in North East Wales serving a population of approximately 300,000. It is one of the largest towns in North Wales, with a thriving and diverse industrial centre and also being the market town for a large rural area.
The countryside surrounding is exceedingly attractive with a National Park less than an hour away. Additionally, major cities are a short commute away.
The Health Board
The Health Board comprises three acute District General Hospitals, mental health services and community hospital provision, and covers all health care providers Wales. There is a consultant body of over 150. All the major specialties and subspecialties are represented with the exception of cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. Visiting consultants provide for thoracic surgery (once a fortnight), plastic surgery, neurology, and super specialist paediatrics. Oncology services are provided by visiting consultants from a specialist Cancer Centre.
The Care of the Elderly Service
We are excited to offer this new permanent full time (1.0 WTE) consultant post within the Directorate of Medicine to improve and enhance Frailty services and the Care of the Elderly department is currently going through an exciting expansion with new services being offered. We are looking for an individual who will help shape the future of the department and can drive innovative ways of working.
The post will be for 10 sessions of which there will be 7 DCCs and 3 SPAs depending on additional duties undertaken, and they are committed to devising an individualised job plan for the successful candidate. Areas that can be incorporated into the final job plan include:
- Frailty
- Community working including pro-active care home medicine
- Falls
- Stroke
- Orthogeriatrics
The Care of the Elderly department provides the following services:
- Frailty
- Acute stroke unit with TIA clinics and a 24/7 thrombolysis service
- Rehabilitation in community hospitals
- Parkinson’s disease and movement disorder clinic
- Multi-disciplinary falls service
- Orthogeriatrics
Current Staff
The current team comprises of 6 consultants with specialist interests in orthogeriatrics, movement disorders, stroke, frailty and falls. Junior staff is comprised of 1 Specialty Doctor (attached to the Stroke Unit), 4 Specialist Registrars, 9 SHO grades (a mix of F2s, CMT, and GPVTS trainees) with the possibility of a third strand F1 during some rotations.
These staff rotate around the department and will make up the junior doctor team supporting the new appointees – at a minimum there will be one SHO attached to each rehabilitation ward, a Staff grade based in the Community Hospital, and one SHO (often more) based on the frailty unit. There is a middle grade to cover the frailty unit and another that provides cover for the rehabilitation unit.
Mentorship
New consultants will be encouraged to take a mentor from colleagues and to attend the local RCP North new consultant events and courses.
Annual and Study Leave
Annual leave is 33 days per year. A maximum of thirty days study leave, over a rolling 3-year period funded study leave is available in line with national terms and conditions. Leave to attend courses will normally be granted up to this limit unless service demands are exceptional.

WHAT IS THE ACUTE ADULT INPATIENT WARD LIKE?
The Adult Acute Inpatient Ward is an acute admission ward based at the Trust Clinic, Campus for Ageing and Vitality in the City. The ward has 20 beds providing assessment and treatment by a multi disciplinary team. The service is for men over the age of 18 years with a mental illness who require assessment and treatment in hospital.
Patients are also offered the following treatments and therapies:
- Occupational therapy – helps with individual or group activities and daily living skills
- Physiotherapy – help with mobility or movement problems or by providing access to gym facilities
- Psychology – this is dependent on your need at the time of admission
- Exercise therapy
- Medication
- Art therapy
Acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units across the NHS Trust were all rated as 'good' by the CQC. The services were found to be providing effective care. All patients had a care plan which was regularly updated and patients had access to a range of care and treatment options which were in line with national guidance. Staff are supervised effectively and have access to additional specialist training, including CESR support.
Staff in the department and across the general adult services are caring. Feedback from patients and carers was consistently positive about staff attitudes. The service was organised in a way that ensured staff focussed on interacting and engaging with patients as opposed to administrative tasks. The service is providing care in a way that was responsive to people’s needs. Beds are managed appropriately to ensure that people could access the service when they needed it.
The service is also very well-led. There is a stable management team with managers at all levels who have the skills, knowledge and experience to perform their roles and support new members of the psychiatry team. Ward managers and senior managers are approachable, ensuring you will be well respected, supported and valued.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TEAM LIKE?
The Children and Young People’s Service provides a single service to all children and young people aged 0-18 years living in the city, and surrounding area, who present with mental health difficulties. This includes children and young people who may be living in difficult and challenging circumstances.
Services for children and young people with a learning disability are provided through collaboration between the Children and Young People’s Services and Community Learning Disability Team.
Services for children and young people experiencing psychosis are provided through collaboration between Children and Young People’s Services and the Early Intervention in Psychosis Team.
The service is also able to provide:
- Assessment, diagnosis and intervention on a range of mental health issues.
- Intensive response and home-based treatment for those children and young people whose mental health is causing significant concern.
- An intensive Eating Disorder Service to support children and young people on the eating disorder pathway who are at risk of an inpatient admission.
- A comprehensive transition support package to those young people who are approaching their 18th birthday and may need continuing support as adults.
- Training, consultation, support and advice to front line staff working in targeted services for children.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TEAM LIKE?
The Older People’s Community service is delivered through three Community Treatment Teams (CTT). The CTTs comprise multi-professional teams including: Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Support Workers. The CTTs provide a service to people with both functional and/or organic disorders, and are able to work flexibly across geographical boundaries in response to workload pressures. The CTT is supported by the Memory Assessment and Management Service (MAMS). MAMS provides assessment for early cognitive impairment and/or complex cognitive problems associated with other conditions. It operates across the city & region, providing outpatient and home based assessment and treatment services. Additionally, there is a Young Onset Dementia Team which provides specialist follow up for people living with dementia aged under 65.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT DEPARTMENT LIKE?
The team is currently developing towards operating a 24/7 core service and the clinical lead will be expected to work some shifts across 7 days, usual working hours will be 9-5, a level of flexibility will be required. A
close working relationship between Integrated care is essential for delivery of the service, the team acts as the link between mental health and the acute trust, advocating for the mental health of patients. The liaison team provides psychiatric input to the acute hospital for those presenting with a mental health problem (age 16 upwards). An important part of the role is sensitively challenging stigma when faced with it and educating others to enhance understanding.
The successful candidate would be expected to work across the acute hospital, and be involved in the assessment of patients within the emergency department as well as supporting wards.
You will be joining a strong and passionate multidisciplinary team and also a very progressive leadership team.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT INPATIENT WARD LIKE?
This General Adult Ward is an acute mental health inpatient unit based at a rural district general hospital. It has 16 beds for adult men and women providing assessment and treatment by a multi disciplinary team. This acute inpatient unit is designed for men and women with mental health problems arising from functional disorders such as depression, anxiety or psychosis, who require a stay in hospital.
Acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units were all rated as 'good' by the CQC. The services were found to be providing effective care. All patients had a care plan which was regularly updated and patients had access to a range of care and treatment options which were in line with national guidance. Staff are supervised effectively and have access to additional specialist training, including CESR support.
Staff in the department and across the general adult services are caring. Feedback from patients and carers was consistently positive about staff attitudes. The service was organised in a way that ensured staff focussed on interacting and engaging with patients as opposed to administrative tasks. The service is providing care in a way that was responsive to people’s needs. Beds are managed appropriately to ensure that people could access the service when they needed it.
The service is also very well-led. There is a stable management team with managers at all levels who have the skills, knowledge and experience to perform their roles and support new members of the psychiatry team. WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT INPATIENT WARD LIKE?
Th Unit is a high risk needs-led acute psychiatric ward for the whole of the region based in hub of the region. It has 22 beds providing assessment, care and treatment by a multi-disciplinary team. The unit is a needs-led unit for men and women aged 18 years and over who have a functional mental illness such as depression, anxiety or psychosis and require admission to hospital because they are:
- At risk of immediate and significant self-harm/suicide or self-neglect due to their mental health and/or
- At immediate and significant risk to others due to their mental health.
- In circumstances where there is immediate risk of the breakdown in normal life or support network.
- In circumstances where existing community service user is already receiving a higher level of input due to the level of deterioration of their mental state, or the increased level of risk
- At significant risk of personal vulnerability and exploitation.
- At significant risk of mental health deterioration without mental health intervention.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT DEPARTMENT LIKE?
The Community Mental Health Team provides an assessment and treatment service for people who are experiencing difficulty with their mental health based on episodic model of care. The CMHT works closely with local Crisis Team, Liaison service and Inpatient services to ensure safe and timely transitions when required. The Community Mental Health Team provides a service for men and women over the age of 18 years who require a period of assessment and treatment.
The Community Team consists of: Band 7 Pathway manager and band 7 Clinical lead with Nurse Consultant working across both East and West teams, 12 band 6 CPN, 3 band 5 CPN, 3 band 3 support workers, 1 5 peer supporter, 3 occupational therapists with various bands and 3 Psychologists (various bands). The team also has support from advanced clinical pharmacist 2 days per week.
Patients are generally care coordinated by the wider team but the post holder can expect to be the Lead Professional in caring for some of these patients. Work allocation is divided between the consultants according to the patient’s GP practice, however fairness and equity of caseload is always ensured. The team receives around 25 referrals a week. Each Consultant would be expected to attend one SPA (single point of access) meeting and one PAM (post assessment meeting) on one day per week.
The current caseload is about 166 clients, Out of this around 140 have identified care coordinators from the MDT Team. Consultant is the lead professional for around 20 clients. The post holder will be expected to be RC for 5 CTO cases.

WHAT IS THE GENERAL ADULT DEPARTMENT LIKE?
The Community Mental Health Assessment and Recovery Team provides a service for adults with severe and enduring mental health conditions. For example, this could include:
- depression which is difficult to treat, reoccurs or has a significant impact upon your ability to get on with daily tasks
- personality disorders
- specific disorders such as moderately severe and severe eating disorder, severe obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias and severe anxiety
- people with a dual diagnosis such as learning disability, or a substance misuse problem together with a mental health problem

WHAT IS THE OLDER ADULTS DEPARTMENT & TEAM LIKE?
Based out of a London Old Age Community Mental Health Team, you will provide leadership and supervision for a multidisciplinary community mental health team (CMHT) for older people and will work closely with the Memory Service (MS), providing clinical input to that service.
You will have responsibility for the diagnostic assessment and treatment of older adult psychiatric patients from the designated catchment area referred to and accepted by the service. Outpatient clinics and domiciliary visits in the community will constitute the majority of the direct clinical care provided by the Consultant. There will be a one day a week commitment to the Memory Service.
The personnel of the CMHT include: medical staff, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapist, and Psychiatric Social Workers. There is a Psychological Therapy Department which provides therapy for older adults and which works across CMHTs in the Borough as does the Occupational Therapy Service. A secretarial team provides administrative support.
